Six athletes claim their second national titles in Louisville

2008 USA CYCLING Masters Road National Championships – COMPLETE RESULTS

Louisville, Ky. (July 2, 2008)—Day three of the 2008 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships saw another 10 amateur cyclists claim national titles in the road race. Held at Cherokee Park in Louisville, four women and six men contested the mass-start events over distances between 25 and 65 miles.
 
Opening the day’s competition was the 30-mile women’s 50-54 road race as Ann Marie Miller (New York, N.Y.) earned her second national title of the week. After winning her respective time trial on Monday, Miller returned to competition on Wednesday and clocked a winning time of 1 hour 25 minutes, and 47 seconds  to claim another Stars-and-Stripes jersey.
 
In the women’s 55-59 contest, Elizabeth Tyrell (Annandale, N.J.), who also captured a time trial championship on Monday, finished 2:30 up on her nearest competitor to add a road race title to her resume in a 25-mile race.
 
In the final women’s race of the day, Melinda Berge (Park City, Utah), claimed the 60-64 road race title, finishing 2:36 ahead of the runner-up, while Julie Lockhart (Dunstable, Mass.) clocked a 1:32:37 over the 25-mile course to come away with the women’s 65+ title. For Lockhart, it was her second championship of the week after winning the time trial on Monday.
 
In the men’s events on Wednesday, there were three repeat champions from the time trial on Monday. Franz Hammer (Oro Valley, Ariz.) earned his second title of the week with a victory in the men’s 70-74 road race, finishing 5:19 ahead of his closest challenger in the 30-mile contest. Kent Bostick (Knoxville, Tenn.) added a men’s 55-59 road race title to his time trial win by winning a two-up sprint after 40 miles of racing. And Kenny Fuller (Corona del Mar, Calif.) captured another Stars-and-Stripes jersey when he claimed the win in the men’s 60-64 road race, finishing 1:19 ahead of second place after 35 miles.
 
Other national champions crowned on Wednesday include Wayne Simon (Lake Barrington, Ill.) in the men’s 50-54 road race, Mike Olheiser (Huntsville, Ala.) in the men’s 30-34 road race and Francois Mertens (New Milford, Conn.) in the men’s 75+ road race.
 
The 2008 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships continue on Thursday with the final road race contests, including the men’s 35-39, 40-44 and 45-49 categories and several tandem categories.
