O’Mara reinstated as 2004 National Champion

October 20, 2004 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) -- USA Cycling has reinstated Johnny O’Mara (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) as the 2004 National Cross Country Champion in the Expert 40-44 category. Mr. O’Mara earned the right to wear the stars and stripes jersey at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships in Mammoth last month, but was mistakenly awarded the silver medal.

The incident was triggered by a clerical error in USA Cycling’s qualification procedures that allowed a semi-pro to race the expert event. We will ensure that similar incidents do not occur at the 2005 USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships.

O’Mara, who rides for Canyon Custom Cycles, completed the 21.9 mile course in 1:54:26.74 – just over two minutes ahead of his nearest threat Den Satake (Mill Valley, Calif.)

Congratulations to 2004 National Champion Johnny O’Mara.
