– The Observed Trials National Championships crowned five new national championships in the stock and mod bike competitions on Saturday at the USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships at Mammoth Mountain.

Mammoth Mountain was a perfect setting for the National Championships, as the riders drew quite a crowd from around the venue. With obstacle courses set up over streams and boulders, the expert, sport, and junior categories competed on Saturday afternoon.

Paul Hempstead was named Junior National Champion in the stock competition with 39 points, while Phil Lucero (San Leandro, Calif.) earned the win in the expert stock contest with 31 points. Jon Bott (Ventura, Calif.) is the new National Champion for the expert mod class with 36 points.

Brian Huntsman (Crowley Lake, Calif.) and Roger Cook posted the wins in the sport mod and stock classes, while victories in the youth events were won by Kees Inserni (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Trevor Smith.

The pro event drew a record-breaking crowd at the Village at Mammoth. Four pro riders contested their national championship over two obstacle courses that were set up around the podium where medals for the day’s events would be awarded.

The 2003 national champions were successful in defending their stars and stripes jerseys, as Jeremy VanShoonhoven claimed top honors in the stock competition with only 7 dabs, and Ryan Cecil earned the title again in the mod contest with 14 dabs.

After the finals, the four pro riders awed the crowd again with a short demonstration, bringing a grand finale to an exciting day of mountain bike events.
