Neko Mulally fourth in elite downhill as top American on last day of MTB Worlds
Hafjell, Norway (September 7, 2014) – Neko Mulally (Pisgah Forest, N.C./Trek World Cycling) was the top American on the final day of the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships as he placed fourth in the elite men's downhill competition.
Mulally's podium near-miss came when he descended the mountain 2.210 seconds off the fastest pace set by new world champion Gee Atherton (GBR). Atherton's time of 3:23.769 got him the rainbow jersey while Josh Bryceland (GBR) earned silver and Troy Brosnan (AUS) secured the bronze. Three other Americans raced the elite men's downhill contest: Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Factory Specialized) in 14th, Eliot Jackson (Westlake Village, Calif.) in 27th, and Max Morgan (Duluth, Ga.) in 65th.
In the elite women's race, Great Britain swept the podium with Manon Carpenter (GBR) descending to the world title in a time of 3:49.407. Rachel Atherton (GBR) earned silver and Tahnee Segrave (GBR) rode to the bronze. American Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco Intl.) was just barely off the podium, finishing 7.472 seconds down for fifth place. Also representing Team USA was Alison Zimmer (Lincoln, Vt. VT/Gravity Racing-Xprezo) in 23rd.
Shane Leslie (Birmingham, Mich.) was the fastest for Team USA in the junior men's downhill. Descending the mountain 16.484 seconds slower than new world champ Loris Vergier (FRA), Leslie ended up in 18th place. Chase Nelson (Littleton, Colo./Trek Southridge Racing) was 20th, Charlie Harrison (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) was 52nd, and Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./SRAM-Troy Lee Designs) was 56th. The silver and bronze medals went to Laurie Greenland (GBR) and Jacob Dickson (IRL).
