Neilson Powless rode to 8th in the junior men's XC
Neilson Powless rode to 8th in the junior men's cross-country race on Thursday.
Hafjell, Norway (September 4, 2014)Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) posted the top result for Team USA Cycling on Thursday as the 2014 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships continued with the junior men's and women's cross-country contests.
 
Powless completed the five laps of the junior men's event just three minutes and 55 seconds off the winning pace to place eighth. The winner was decided in the first lap when Danish rider Simon Andreassen went off the front and created a gap that he held until the very end. Egan Bernal (COL) and Luca Schwarzbauer (GER) crossed the finish line for the silver and bronze medals.
 
Powless was joined by several other Team USA Cycling riders. Garrett Gerchar (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling-Tokyo Joe’s Jr.) placed 46th while Landen Beckner (Helena, Mont.) was 58th and Carson Beckett (Benton, Ky./Wood-N-Wave) was 67th. Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) also competed for the USA.

In the junior women's race, Ksenia Lepikhina (Boulder, Colo.) was the top American in 27th while compatriot Shea Chavez (Flagstaff, Ariz.) was 31st. The four lap contest was won by Nicole Koller (DEN) who got away from the group pretty early along

with second- and third-place riders Malene Degn (DEN) and Sina Frei (SUI).
