NCC: Keough, Colavita-Fine Cooking wrap up 2014 championships

Print (Sept. 4, 2014) – Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./UnitedHealthcare) and Colavita-Fine Cooking capped impressive 2014 USA Cycling National Criterium Calendar (NCC) campaigns last weekend, respectively claiming the men’s individual and women’s team titles after the Staenberg Group Gateway Cup in St. Louis, Mo., Aug. 29-Sept. 1.
MEN’S
Keough wrapped up the men’s individual title at the penultimate NCC event of the year, claiming second in the four-day omnium, thanks to an Aug. 29 criterium win as well as three other top-three criterium finishes. With one event left on the calendar, Keough’s 769 point total will hold up for the season championship. With second place still up for grabs in the men’s standings, Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif./Athlete Octane Cycling) used a third-place omnium result to hold his second rank, upping his point total to 639, while Kenneth Hanson’s (San Diego, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) omnium win closed the gap on second, giving him 617 points and leaving the NCC runner-up in doubt. Adam Myerson (Boston, Mass./SmartStop Pro Cycling) held fourth with 459 points following his ninth-place omnium finish, followed by Isaac Howe (Winooski, Vt./Champion System-Stan's No Tubes) in fifth with 428 after taking sixth at the Staenberg Group Gateway Cup.
WOMEN’S
A week after Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz./Colavita-Fine Cooking) picked up the women’s individual championship, riders vied for the remaining top five with two events to go. Allar added to her top points total by placing sixth at the Staenberg Group Gateway Cup omnium, increasing her tally to 1,047. Tina Pic (Hailey, Idaho/Fearless Femme) continued to make a case for herself as the second strongest rider this season by finishing fourth at the four-day omnium, which ballooned her score to 752 points. Holding third, Laura Van Gilder (Cresco, Pa./Van Dessel Factory Team p/b Mellow Mushroom) used a fifth-place omnium result to bring her score to 674, but a charging Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./UnitedHealthcare) made the hunt for third place more compelling by winning the omnium and closing to within 23 points of Van Gilder with 651. Samantha Schneider’s (Milwaukee, Wis./TIBCO-To the Top) strong weekend moved her back into the top five, as she took silver at the Staenberg Group Gateway Cup omnium to give her a fifth-best point total at 507.
TEAM
Colavita Fine-Cooking clinched the women’s team championship after recording two top-10 finishes at the omnium, giving the team a series-best 1,825 points. UnitedHealthcare surged forward from third to second on the shoulders of Rivera’s first- and Hanna Barnes’ (GBR/UnitedHealthcare) third-place omnium finishes, totaling 1,362 points with one event remaining. TIBCO/To the Top dropped from second to third with 1,243 points despite Schneider’s strong showing. Pepper Palace Pro Cycling held fourth with 984 points, while Fearless Femme’s 866 points is good enough for fifth.
Despite winning the men’s team title a week prior, UnitedHealthcare kept its foot on the gas, riding Hanson and Keoughs’ first- and second-place finishes to an astounding 2,886 points. Athlete Octane Cycling retained its second-place standing with 986 points, thanks to Holloway’s bronze-medal performance, and Astellas Cycling Team held third with 854 points. Champion System-Stan’s NoTubes and SmartStop Pro Cycling rounded out the top five with 711 and 586 points, respectively.
