Don Myrah rides to victory on Friday at cyclo-cross nationals in Verona, Wis.
The muddy and foggy conditions proved to be seventh heaven for defending champion Donald Myrah (San Jose, Calif.) as he notched his seventh cyclo-cross national title on Friday, easily winning the masters men’s 45-49 race. Riding even through the first lap with Tim Butler (Portland, Ore./Evolution Racing Team-WA), Myrah opened a gap on the second circuit and never relinquished the lead, crossing the line after five laps with a time of 46:22. Roger Aspholm (Haworth, N.J./Finkraft) finished strong for the silver medal in 46:58, while Butler held on for third in 47:03.
“I had some questions coming in because I wasn’t riding so well this year and my form came around just in time,” Myrah said. “I’m glad it (course conditions) was like it was today and not like yesterday, a little sloppier and muddier which was nice, I like that. I made a lot of time on the sloppy, nasty stuff on the bottom back there. Tim (Butler) wasn’t riding quite as fast in that section and I kept the gas on through there.”
Kari Studley (Bothell, Wash./Team Redline) raced to her second national title of the week in the masters women’s 30-34 division, after taking the women’s singlespeed championship on Wednesday. Studley led at the end of each of the three laps and finished with a time of 35:28, 15 seconds ahead of Brianne Marshall (Durango, Colo./NoTubes Endurance Racing). Rebecca Blatt (Lakewood, Colo./Van Dessel Factory Team) placed third in 36:36.
“It’s icy, really slick out there,” said Studley of the worsening conditions. “It’s bike skating, which I love. I made my move at the top of the first climb. It was more technical than the singlespeed race, but it was nice to be able to change gears.”
In the masters women’s 35-39 race, Corey Coogan Cisek (Minneapolis, Minn./Cyclocrossracing.com) took advantage of a flat tire by race leader Amanda Carey (Victor, Idaho) on the final lap to steal the victory. Coogan Cisek broke the line with a time of 37:47 as Carey limped home 45 seconds later to claim the silver medal. Katie Melena (Santa Cruz, Calif./Bicycle Bluebook-HRS-Rock Lobster Cyclocross) charged home for the bronze with a time of 39:28.
Emma White (Delanson, N.Y./Cyclocrossworld) overcame a crash and a bobble on the first lap to repeat as the juniors women's 15-16 national champion. White finished the nearly six-mile race 56 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, the winner of last year's juniors women 13-14 race, Mina Anderberg (Boulder, Colo./T.E.A.M. Fuji-Sports T.E.A.M.). The 15-year-old Anderberg finished 33 seconds ahead of the bronze medalist Hannah Arensman (Rutherford College, N.C./Fiets Maan Racing p/b Luna Cycles).
"It was fun. I love these conditions," White said. "I wanted to go as fast as I could, but not take any unnecessary risks. It was very muddy and slippery out there."
Ellen Noble (Kennebunkport, Maine/Trek Cyclocross Collective) dethroned the defending national champion, Corrie Osborne (Meguon, Wis./Team Extreme), to win the juniors women's 17-18 national championship. Noble, whose season was inspired after her father lost his battle with cancer in 2012, finished the three-lap contest 30 seconds ahead of Osborne. Hannah Finchamp (Altadena, Calif./Team Luna Chix) placed third, 1:02 behind Noble.
In one of the day's more tightly contested races, Courtney Comer (San Marcos, Calif./Ccf Racing Team-Cpt) won the juniors women's 13-14 national title. The top five riders finished within 27 seconds of each other. Comer bested the 17-rider field, finishing the nearly two-mile course in 12:05. Sydney Lach (Cincinnati, Ohio/Team Kenda p/b Racc) placed second, only eight seconds behind Comer. The third-place rider, Ashley Zoerner (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Groove Subaru-Alpha Bicycle Co), finished just 13 seconds behind Comer while Turner Ramsay (Rutland, Vt./Killington Mountain School) and Abigail Youngwerth (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad)) finished only 27 seconds behind Comer in fourth and fifth places, respectively.
After trailing race leader Nolan Stephenson (Broomfield, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling) for much of the three-lap juniors men’s 10-12 race, Thomas Francisco (Louisville, Ky./Red Zone Cycling) surged to victory by just two seconds over Stephenson, crossing the line first in 19:54, while fellow Louisville racer William Bobrow (Louisville, Ky./Better Cycling of Louisville) came in third at 20:46.
Katie Clouse (Park City, Utah/Cole Sport), who appeared on several USA Cycling podiums in 2012, dominated the juniors women’s 10-12 field, winning by nearly three minutes over her rivals with a time of 20:57. Arianna Schafer (Barrington, Ill./Verdigris-Village CX Team) nipped Morgan Fortin (Albuquerque, N.M./Goathead Jr. Devo) at the line to take the silver medal with a time of 23:55.
The Clouse family made it two medals on the day when Evan Clouse (Park City, Utah/Cole Sport) won the silver medal in the juniors men’s 13-14 race. Denzel Stephenson (Broomfield, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling) dominated this division as he finished in 20:35, 1 minute and 16 seconds in front of Clouse, while capturing the bronze medal was Edward Fritzinger (Georgetown, Ind./Red Zone Cycling), who was 1:29 behind Stephenson.
In juniors men’s 15-16 action, Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./IC3 Colorado) proved to be the strongest of the 44-rider field as he crossed the line in 29:58. Storming into the silver medal was Spencer Petrov (Mason, Ohio/Lionhearts-Queen City Wheels) who overtook bronze medalist Cooper Willsey (Hinesburg, Vt./Cannondale Cyclocrossworld) to finish 32 seconds off the pace. Willsey was eight seconds back of Petrov.
The racing continues until Sunday, Jan. 13. Saturday’s racing action features competition in the women’s collegiate and masters men’s 30-34, 35-39 and 40-44 divisions, as well as the first two UCI races – the juniors men’s 17-18 and U23 men’s events.
