Personal

Michael Broderick came by riding bicycles fast very honestly. At an early age, he realized that riding his bike was a significantly faster method to get to the end of the driveway to catch the school than walking. He enjoyed being on two wheels and pursued his childhood passion. He began racing mountain bikes in earnest in 1991.

Cycling wasn't the only sport Broderick pursued as he excelled in team sports, especially football. As a fullback, outside linebacker and place kicker, Broderick thrived at anything that allowed him to play outside. He discovered endurance sports as ran on the track and field team at his high school to maintain his fitness for football season. During the winter, Broderick enjoyed snowboarding and surfing during the summer as a teenager.

Once he decided to pursue cycling, Broderick enjoyed success domestically and internationally. While the Stars-and-Stripes jersey has eluded him, he is consistently in the top-10 finishers at USA Cycling mountain bike national championships. The closest he came to winning was a bronze medal at the 2007 event in West Dover, Vt. Internationally, Broderick has represented the United States at UCI World Championships and World Cup events.

Broderick is married to Mary McConneloug, who is a two-time Olympic mountain biker, and the couple lives in Chilmark, Mass. When he is not competing, Broderick helps McConneloug during her races as a mechanic. He feels lucky to share the travel and racing program with McConneloug which makes it possible to commit to the cycling lifestyle they have created.
