Personal
Matthew Busche enjoyed tremendous success as a cross-country runner before cycling. As a collegiate athlete at Luther College in Iowa, Busche was twice named a NCAA All-American cross-country athlete as well as the 2007 Iowa Conference Most Valuable Player. After placing sixth as a sophomore and junior, Busche, as a senior, helped Luther College sweep the men's and women's Iowa Intercollegiate Athlete Conference (IIAC) cross-country championships. Busche earned the conference's most valuable runner accolades in the process. An injury in 2005 steered him toward cycling as a form of cross-country training. He hasn't looked back since completing his running career. His meteoric rise in cycling is very rare.
After only two years as a stagiare for the Pro-Continental Team Kelly Benefit Strategies, Busche caught the attention of Johan Bruyneel, who offered him a contract to race as a member of the UCI ProTour Team, Team RadioShack.
With RadioShack, Busche has recorded impressive results, including three top-10 finishes in the road race contest and a pair of top-five results in the time trial contest of the USA Cycling Professional Road & Time Trial National Championships. After knocking on the door, Busche broke through on Memorial Day weekend in 2011 in dramatic fashion. On Saturday, Busche placed third in the time trial before winning a two-rider sprint to the finish line, narrowly edging the legendary George Hincapie in the road race on Monday in Greenville, S.C.
Busche resides with his wife, Lisa, in Gerona, Spain.
