Points of Interest

• Mary earned her undergraduate degree from Santa Clara University (1993).  She majored in music, specializing in vocal performance where she learned to sing in many languages and styles: mostly classical, opera, folk and choral ensemble music.

• Mary and Michael live a nomadic lifestyle focused on making it to priority races, often in a mobile home, which enables them to stay focused on training and staying healthy with home-cooked meals. They return home to Chilmark, Mass., every opportunity they have, but travel to races about nine months of the year.

• Mary has raced on six of the seven global continents where she enjoys sampling the dirt, forests and culture of each unique venue. Her favorite places to ride are where she doesn't have to get in a car or on a plane... although the hills of Marin County will always be a favorite.

Personal

Mary grew up in Fairfax, Calif., as the middle child of five. Before mountain biking, there was music and Mary studied piano and voice for 15 years, which led to Santa Clara University where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance in 1993. In between lessons, performances and various recitals however, Mary never missed a beat while she simultaneously developed her athletic drive through sports as diverse as soccer, volleyball, and standup paddle-boarding.

Competitive mountain bike racing came later at the respectable age of 27, when McConneloug moved to Bend, Ore., and started scoring results that launched her into the pro ranks the following year. There she met her future husband, Michael Broderick, to whom she always bestows the greatest gratitude for his undying support of her career. While her results undoubtedly qualify her for a spot on a team with the full support of a manager, mechanics, and teammates, Mary and Michael created and manage their team of two, which has full responsibility for all aspects of team management, including contract negotiations, sponsorship, publicity, travel, training and, of course, racing. This frees them up to take advantage of a region with a high concentration of racing, such as central Europe. They spend most of the year racing on the   international circuit competing in the UCI World Cup series and at other top level competitions including continental and world championships. Their chosen mode of transport is the RV, which they regard as the most convenient and efficient way to travel to the high-level competitions while on the road. To be able to cook for themselves and sleep in the same bed every night helps them balance the rigors of training, racing and life on the road.
