Personal

Levi Leipheimer followed in the footsteps of legendary cyclists Lance Armstrong, Bobby Julich and Greg LeMond when he became the fourth American ever to finish on the final podium at the Tour de France. Levi is one of only 10 Americans who have won a stage of the Tour.

A competitive Alpine skier, Levi switched to cycling at age 19 while he was a student at the University of Utah after using the bike for cross-training purposes. Levi had a solid year as a domestic pro in 1999, capped by his win in the U.S. National Time Trial. He gained attention following this achievement from several UCI ProTour squads, and has raced since 2000 for some of the world’s top cycling teams, including the U.S. Postal Service (USA), Rabobank (NED), Gerolsteiner (GER), Discovery Channel (USA), Astana (LUX) and Team RadioShack (USA). Today he is known as one of the world’ top Grand Tour riders.

Away from competitive cycling, Levi and his wife Odessa are well-known animal lovers, and promote animal welfare causes throughout the United States. The couple has six cats and two dogs, and Levi and Odessa act as spokespersons for PETA to promote animal population control. They have cared for more than 100 foster animals in their home as part of their animal rescue work.
