Kintner places fourth as UCI MTB World Championships conclude

  
  


Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (Sept. 1, 2013) - The 2013 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships concluded Sunday with the elite downhill and the cross-country eliminator races.

Downhill

Jill Kintner (Seattle, Wash./Team Norco International), who flatted in Saturday's seeding run, narrowly missed a medal in the elite women's downhill on Sunday. Kintner placed fourth, only 1.03 seconds behind Tracey Hannah (AUS), who took the bronze medal. Rachel Atherton (GBR) topped the field, finishing her run at 4:28.043 while Emmeline Ragot (FRA) earned the silver medal for the second consecutive year, finishing 8.632 seconds behind Atherton.

Neko Mulally (Reading, Pa./Trek World Racing) recorded the Americans' best result in the elite men's downhill competition. Mulally placed 14th, stopping the clock 8.878 seconds behind the winner, Greg Minnaar (RSA), who posted a time of 3:58.058. Logan Binggeli (Saint George, Utah/KHS Factory Racing) placed 33rd, stopping the clock 18.735 seconds behind Minnaar while Kevin Aiello (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./KHS Factory Racing) was in 36th, 19.999 seconds back. Despite crashing early in his run, Mitch Ropelato (Ogden, Utah/Factory Specialized DH) placed 56th, 26.868 seconds behind Minnaar. Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./Specialized Racing DH) finished his run 1:00.436 slower than Minnaar to place 67th.

Cross-Country Eliminator
Two American women advanced out of the qualifying round of the cross-country eliminator. Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory Racing XC) and Shayna Powless (Roseville, Calif./BMC Mountain Bike Development Team) each advanced to the 1/8 final before being eliminated. Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized), Judy Freeman (Littleton, Colo./Crankbrothers Race Club) and Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo./Luna Pro Team) contested the race, but did not advance out of the qualifying round. Alexandra Engen (SWE) won the women's cross-country eliminator ahead of Jolanda Neff (SUI) and Linda Indergand (SUI), who finished second and third, respectively.

Seven American men contested the men's eliminator, but did not advance out of the qualifying round. Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Cannondale Factory Racing) placed 48th in the qualifying round in which the top 32 riders advance. Luke Vrouwenvelder (Chapel Hill, N.C./Cycle Youth) was 63rd while Russell Finsterwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Factory Racing) and Stephen Ettinger (Bozeman, Mont./BMC Mountain Bike Team) placed 66th and 69th, respectively. Michael Broderick (Chilmark, Mass./Kenda-Stan's No Tubes) was 72nd, Kerry Werner (Banner Elk, N.C./BMC Mountain Development Team) was 76th and Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Specialized Racing) finished 83rd. Paul Van Der Ploeg (AUS) won the men's event, edging Daniel Federspiel (AUT) and Catriel Andres Soto (ARG), who rode away with the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
