Personal

Kevin Mansker grew up a speed and adrenaline junkie, so when a buddy of his brought him to the Alpenrose Velodrome in Portland, Ore., it was a natural fit. Having never seen a velodrome before nor had they an idea of a fixed gear bicycle, the two high school seniors enrolled in a beginner's class and returned weekly to learn.

Mansker, the owner of nine track records throughout the United States, enjoyed a breakout season in 2011. He set the track record on July 23, 2011, in the Flying 200-meter Time Trial at the Marymoor Velodrome in Redmond, Wash., when he registered a 10.779. The previous record of 10.781, which was held by Canadian Olympian Curt Harnett, stood for 22 years.

He continued his stellar riding throughout 2011, appearing on the podium four times at the 2011 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships. He also finished 15th in the Men's Sprint at the UCI World Cup in Cali, Colombia.

Mansker's mother has multiple sclerosis, so Kevin works with the M.S. Society of Portland to raise funds to be used for research. He is also working with RaceMD on fundraising efforts in Portland, Ore.

A 19 year-old Army private on his way to Ranger school, Mansker was honorably, medically discharged after being diagnosed with a back condition. Although disappointed that his dream of serving his country militarily was cut short, he channeled his energy into cycling and now is on the brink of realizing his dream of serving his country in a different capacity.

When Mansker is not on his bike, he might be under the hood of his 1988 Toyota MR2. He considers himself a "pretty big car guy" and has tinkered with it, including swapping in a 3.8 liter supercharged v6 engine.
