Katie Compton stays hot with another UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup win

Heusden-Zolder, Belgium (December 26, 2013) – Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective) on Thursday continued her stellar season after claiming her fourth UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup victory during round five in Heusden-Zolder, Belgium.

Compton went into the race ranked number one after gold medal performances in the second, third and fourth races after a silver medal ride in round one. She is now well on her way to the overall series victory, sitting atop the elite women's World Cup standings with 290 points.

Compton topped Marianne Vos (NED) by 20 seconds to secure the victory. Sanne Cant (BEL) placed third, 57 seconds behind Compton. Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) finished 2:52 behind Compton in 14th place. Americans Arley Kemmerer (Saylorsburg, Pa./C3-Twenty20 Cycling), Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Meredith Miller (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) finished 19th, 20th and 21st, respectively. Nicole Duke (Boulder, Colo./Marin-Spy) was the next-best American rider, finishing 24th. The leader of the USA Cycling Professional Cyclo-cross Calendar (Pro CX) women's standings, Elle Anderson (San Francisco, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized), was 29th while Courtenay McFadden (Bellingham, Wash./Bicycle Blue Book-HRS-Rock Lobster) completed the course one second behind her in 30th place. Maureen Bruno Roy (Arlington, Mass./Bob's Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) rounded out the American women's effort, placing 38th, 5:22 behind Compton.

Three American men competed in the elite men's race. Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Fuji-Spy Optics) posted the contingent's best result, placing 35th, 3:30 behind the winner, Lars Van Der Haar (NED). Van Der Haar completed the course in 1:02:41, winning a sprint ahead of Martin Bina (CZE) and Zdenek Stybar (CZE), who placed second and third, respectively. Jeremy Durrin (Easthampton, Mass./Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) was the next American to cross the line, placing 44th while Zach McDonald (Bainbridge Island, Wash./Rapha-Focus) was 46th.

Van Der Haar tops the elite men's standings with 337 points. Page is the top-ranked American, sitting in 27th place with 108 points. Durrin has seven points and McDonald has five points.

Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) topped the Americans in the U23 men's race. White finished 1:29 behind the winner Mathieu Van Der Poel (NED), who completed the course in 49:08. White placed 20th while Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) was 23rd. Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) was 31st, 3:39 behind Van Der Poel. Andrew Dillman (Fairdale, Ky./Sophisticated Living-Bob's Red Mill Cyclocross) finished in 35th place, 3:58 behind the winner while Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) was 37th. Spencer Downing (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Cyclocross Team) rounded out the American riders, placing 42nd.

Van Der Poel tops the U23 standings with 275 points. Owen is the top American, sitting in a tie for 18th place 51 points. White has 15 points to place 38th in the standings.

All six of the American juniors men riders finished within four minutes of the race winner, Adam Toupalik (CZE). Toupalik completed the race in 43:47, only seven seconds ahead of Yannick Peeters (BEL) and nine seconds ahead of Thijs Aerts (BEL), who claimed the silver and bronze medals, respectively. Peter Goguen (Hopedale, Mass./Race Cf-Racecf.org @Racecf), a strong contender in the Pro CX juniors men's standings, topped the Americans' performance in Belgium on Thursday by finishing 18th, 1:51 behind Toupalik. Maxx Chance (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Cross Team) was the next American to finish the race, placing 27th, 2:57 behind the winner. Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn./Race Cf-Racecf.org @Racecf), who clinched the top spot of the Pro CX juniors men's standings, was 35th, only two seconds ahead of Cooper Willsey (Hinesburg, Vt./Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), who placed 36th. Garrett Gerchar (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Junior Cycling) edged Ian McShane (Louisville, Ky./Sophisticated Living-Bob's Red Mill) for 39th place. Gerchar was 3:44 behind Toupalik while McShane placed 40th, 3:50 behind the winner.

Peeters, who was the runner up in today's race, leads the standings with 227 points. Goguen is the top American in the standings with 20 points to place 31st. Josey Weik (Wrenshall, Minn./RedZone Cycling), who did not race in Thursday's contest, sits in 40th place with 10 points. Chance has amassed eight points to place 44th in the standings.

The 2013-14 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup continues in Rome, Italy on Jan. 5 before wrapping up on Jan. 26 in Nommay, France.
