Junior national titles awarded on the track on Friday

Carson, Calif. (July 2, 2009) – The USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships continued on Friday at the Home Depot Center Velodrome in suburban L.A.

After posting the sixth fastest time in the 200m qualification round, Shelbe Eck (Plano, Texas/Matrix/RBM) went on to beat out top qualifier Maddie Godby (Louisville, Colo./Rocky Mounts/IZZE) in the women’s 17-18 sprint final. Colleen Gulick (Spring City, Pa./Team Kenda) followed up her two gold medals from Thursday with a bronze medal in the sprint, while Shelby Reynolds (Cypress, Texas/Sugar Cycles) and Mandy Marquardt (Plantation, Flas./MikeFraysseeSports.com) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth.  

Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif./Rock Racing) improved on his silver medal effort in Thursday’s points race with a win in the men’s 17-18 3-kilometer pursuit on Friday. Moir bested Danny Heeley (Hermosa Beach, Calif./South Bay Wheelmen) in the gold medal round to take the national title. Zack Stein (Saint Charles, Mo./IS Corp/Nova Cycle) beat our Jeremy Shirock (Emmaus, PA./South Mountain Cycle) for the bronze medal while Daniel Farinha (San Jose, Calif./SJBC/SugarCRM) won the race for the podium’s fifth spot.

In the men’s team sprint event, the trio of Danny Heeley, Benny Swedberg (Kent, Wash./Rad Racing), and Jesse Marans (Newport Coast, Calif./Momentum Cycling) won the national title by beating out Andrew Lanier (Gilroy, Calif./Team Specialized), Joel Shaffer (Los Altos Hills, Calif./Team Specialized), and Danny Hiller (Boulder, Colo./5280 Magazine). Riding to the bronze medal was the SJBC/SugarCRM team of Daniel Farinha, Vincent Juarez (San Jose, Calif.) and Eddie Zhang (Los Gatos, Calif.)

In the women’s team sprint event, Christine Barron (Los Angeles, Calif./Home Depot Center) and Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Proman Hit Squad) joined forces to secure the national title by beating out silver medalists Shelbe Eck and Colleen Gulick, and bronze medalists Maddie Godby and Shelby Reynolds.

In the younger age categories, several events were contested on Friday which will factor into the overall omniums that will be awarded as racing concludes on Sunday.

Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Alliance Environment) added a gold medal to the one he collected on opening day when he beat out Chazz Martin (Wilmette, Ill./Nova Sports Cycling) and Jesse Marans (Newport Coast, Calif./Momentum Cycling) for the win in the men’s 15-16 8-kilometer scratch race. In the women’s 15-16 6-kilometer scratch race, Christine Barron (Los Angeles, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) also took her second win in as many days. Kaitlyn Lawrence (Emmaus, Pa./Vortex) and Jennifer Valente (San Diego, Calif.) scored the silver and bronze medals respectively.   

In the 13-14 age groups, Calan Farley (Pittstown, NJ/Alliance Environment) scored the top place on the podium when he bested Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./Team 5280/Slipstream) and Zack Gould (Boulder, Colo./Vic’s Espresso Cycling) for the win in the men’s 4-kilometer scratch race. Tara McCormick took her second victory of the week with a win over Sarah Chen (San Marino, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) and Jacqueline Chen (San Marino, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) in the women’s 1-kilometer scratch race.

Chazmichael Morales (El Segundo, Calif./Connie Cycling) and Danielle Mullis (Rochester Hills, Mi./Wolverene Sports) both repeated their gold medal efforts from Thursday with wins in the men’s and women’s 10-12 1-kilometer scratch race. In the men’s event, Adrien Costa (Los Altos, Calif. and Grant McElroy (Portland, Ore./Beaverton Bicycle) rode to the silver and bronze medals while Rachel Cross (Costa Mesa, Calif./Sho-air/Sonance) and Ashley Ambrisko (Mountainview, Calif./Sugar CRM) took the second and third steps on the podium in the women’s race.
