Personal

Growing up in southern California, Jennifer Valente has been around bikes her entire life. She rode around her San Diego-neighborhood on mountain and BMX bikes since she can remember. In 2008, at age 13, Valente enrolled in free classes for kids at the San Diego Velodrome and enjoyed it. She purchased a track bike and started racing in the summer of 2009.

She quickly saw returns as she reached the podium three times at the 2009 USA Cycling Juniors and Paracycling Track National Championships in Carson, Calif. Valente hasn't looked back since, collecting a total of seven national titles at the 2010 and 2011 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships. She reached the pinnacle of still nascent career when she rode away with gold (Scratch Race) and bronze (Keirin) medals at the 2011 UCI Junior Track World Championships in Moscow.

Valente said she owes part of her success to her former coach, Mark Whitehead, who passed away suddenly in July 2011. "I worked with Mark till the day he passed away at Nationals in July 2011," Valente said. "I only knew him for a few years but in that time he taught me to never give up, to always try my hardest and give 100 percent, and to dream big."

With advice like that and the ability she has shown, their is no limit to Valente's potential.
