Personal
Jason McCartney rose to cycling stardom in 2004 when he captured a stage of the Tour de Georgia in April. The solid all-around rider went on to confirm his reputation two months later by earning a berth on the U.S. Olympic team with a victory in the Olympic Trials Road Race. Since then, Jason has ridden for several UCI ProTour squads: The Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, Team CSC, and Team RadioShack.
Jason was introduced to competitive cycling because of his job as a salesman at a local shoe store in Iowa City. The shop happened to be on the course of the Snake Alley Criterium — one of the top domestic races in America. It was there he sold a pair of shoes to a bike shop owner who offered Jason a job, and from there he was hooked on the sport. After eventually giving up cycling for two years, Jason re-emerged with a newfound focus in 1998.
Off the bike, the National Outdoor Leadership School graduate is known for his love of nature, having spent several off-seasons helping manage a friend’s organic farm. In his spare time, Jason gravitates toward outdoor-related activities, whether it’s backpacking in the Rockies or helping to preserve a forest reserve and cross-country mountain bike trials. He also enjoys cooking, cross-country skiing and spending time with his wife, Andrea, and their two children.
