Minsk, Belarus (February 22, 2013) – American Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./Performance United - FELT) finished 17th in the women’s scratch race today at the 2013 UCI Track World Championships. It was the second race for Hammer at the event, having previously won the individual pursuit on Wednesday.

Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska earned gold in the scratch race, followed by Sofia Arreola Navarro of Mexico and Evgeniya Romanyuta of Russia.

“Sarah animated the race early, but appeared to be heavily marked and opted to come in safely in the name of saving herself for the grueling six-event omnium,” said Benjamin Sharp, USA Cycling’s high performance director of endurance programs.

Hammer won the omnium at the UCI World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico, in January, and placed second in the event at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

“Going into the omnium, she has built some confidence after having been able to ride the track in two of the omnium events: the individual pursuit and scratch,” explained Sharp. “She is eager for the inevitable showdown with some of the other favorites. It looks like they are all on good form, and it has the makings to be a knockdown, drag out fight all the way through the 500-meter time trial on Sunday afternoon.”

The omnium begins Saturday with the flying lap. The points race and the elimination race round out the first day of omnium competition. On Sunday, riders will contest the individual pursuit and scratch, then finish with the 500m time trial.
