Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec, Canada (June 23, 2012) — In her first World Cup since being named to the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo. /Luna Pro Team) rode to second place in the elite women’s cross-country race at the RockyRoads.net UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Presented by Shimano in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada.

Fellow Olympic team member Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt. /Specialized Racing) also earned a top-ten finish, placing seventh. Gould crossed the line just 23 seconds behind her Luna Pro Team teammate Catharine Pendrel of Canada, who finished first in a time of 1:41:40 after overtaking Gould during the final lap of the race.

In the women's juniors race, Shayna Powless (Roseville, Calif./BMC Mountain Bike Development Team) took home fifth place, followed by Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized) in sixth.

“Shayna was riding in a group of three riders who were fighting for third, but a late race mechanical took her out of podium contention,” explained USA Cycling Mountain Bike Program Director Marc Gullickson. “It was a very muddy race due to a late afternoon thunderstorm that soaked the course just before the junior women's start.”

In the U23 women’s race, Jill Behlen (Boulder, Colo./Tokyo Joe's -Whole Foods/Primal) was the top American after placing fourteenth. Kaila Hart (Durango, Colo./Stan’s NoTubes Elite Women’s Team) followed her across the line in fifteenth.

Men’s Races

Russell Finsterwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Subaru-Trek) also scored the United States a top-ten finish, riding to tenth in the U23 men’s race. He was the highest-placing American male on Saturday. The two members of the 2012 U.S. Olympic men’s mountain biking team, Samuel Schultz (Missoula, Mont. /Subaru-Trek) and Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./Specialized Racing), finished 20th and 22nd, respectively, in the men’s elite race.

Racing continues on Sunday with the juniors men’s cross-country race followed by the downhill competitions. Live streaming coverage can be seen at live.redbull.tv.
