Fourteen riders selected to represent USA at Juniors Track Worlds

  
  


Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 31, 2013) — USA Cycling on Wednesday announced the 14 athletes scheduled to represent the United States at the 2013 UCI Juniors Track World Championships at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Scotland, from Aug. 7-11.

The team is comprised of eight men and six women, including 13 riders who qualified as an automatic selection (as outlined in USA Cycling’s selection criteria) in at least one race.

Zachary Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix Cycling Club) was an automatic selection to compete in the scratch race and omnium in Glasgow. He also will compete in the men's team pursuit as a discretionary selection. Carlson landed on the podium after each of the races he started at the 2013 USA Cycling Juniors Track National Championships in Trexlertown, Pa. Carlson won the scratch race and omnium. He added a bronze medal in the individual pursuit. Raul Arias Jr. (East Palo Alto, Calif./San Jose Bicycle Club) is an automatic selection to compete in the points race at the world championships. He topped the juniors men's 17-18 podium in the points race and finished fourth in the omnium. Jordan Cullen (Hudson, Wis./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development), who was tapped as an automatic selection to contest the individual pursuit, will add the team pursuit to his docket in Glasgow. He won both events in Trexlertown last week. Jonathan Schilling (Grover, Mo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) will compete in the men's team pursuit after winning the team pursuit, finishing second in the team sprint and placing fourth in the individual pursuit at the national championships. The son of Olympic medalist, Marty Nothstein, Tyler Nothstein (Orefield, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation), is emerging as a bonafide talent on the track. He is an automatic selection to compete in the team sprint. He will also compete in the match sprint in Glasgow after winning the team sprint and placing fourth in the keirin in Trexlertown. Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) earned automatic selections to represent the United States in the time trial and team pursuit as well as being a discretionary selection to compete in the individual pursuit. Dessau won the time trial and team pursuit while placing second in the individual pursuit in Trexlertown. Calan Farley (Pittstown, N.J./Chester County Cycling Foundation), who was an automatic selection to compete in the keirin and a discretionary selection to contest the time trial, will also race in the team sprint and match sprint in Glasgow. In Trexlertown, Farley won the keirin and team sprint while placing second in the time trial and sprint. James Mellen (Schnecksville, Pa./Sprinter's Edge Track Development Team), who topped the field at the national championships in the team sprint, match sprint and flying time trial, is an automatic selection to compete in the match sprint. He is also a discretionary selection to compete in the keirin and will toe the line in the men's team sprint.

The women that will don the red, white and blue kits are equally talented. Shannon Bhatia (San Jose, Calif./Team TIBCO II) earned a national championship in the match sprint in Trexlertown last week. She will represent the United States in that event as an automatic selection while toeing the line in the time trial as a discretionary selection. Nadia Latzgo (Fogelsville, Pa./EXERGY TWENTY16) earned automatic selections to compete in the women's team sprint and time trial in Glasgow. She is also slated to ride in the women's team pursuit. Latzgo collected national titles in the time trial, team pursuit and team sprint in Trexlertown last week. Laurel Rathbun (Monument, Colo./Exergy TWENTY16) is an automatic selection to contest the team pursuit in Scotland after the same four women topped the podium in Trexlertown. Rathbun is also a discretionary selection to compete in the individual pursuit. After winning the scratch race, points race and team pursuit, Sarah Huang (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Exergy TWENTY16) is an automatic selection to compete in those events in Glasgow. She is also a discretionary selection to compete in the keirin and will also contest the team pursuit. Tara McCormick (Long Beach, Calif./Exergy TWENTY16) is an automatic selection to contest the team sprint and keirin. She will also toe the line in the women's team pursuit, which are the three events she won at the most recent national championships. Endurance rider Bailey Semian (Mertztown, Pa./Team TIBCO II) earned automatic selections to contest the individual pursuit and omnium after winning national titles in both events at the 2013 national championships.

“It's a great opportunity for these young men and women to gain international world championship experience in a world-class venue like the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome,” USA Cycling Vice President of Athletics Jim Miller said. “We're looking forward to measuring ourselves against the athletes from around the world.”

Competition begins on Wednesday, Aug. 7, with qualification for the men’s team pursuit and team sprint. Additionally, the women will compete in the team sprint and scratch race. The following day, the men will contest the individual pursuit, keirin and scratch race while the women are slated to ride in the time trial and team pursuit. Friday’s action includes the conclusion of the women’s sprint and individual pursuit while the men are set to ride in the points race, time trial and the first three races of the omnium. The penultimate day of competition, Saturday showcases the men’s sprint finale, the last three rounds of the men’s omnium, the first three rounds of the women’s omnium, women’s points race and the finale of the women’s sprint. The final day of racing features the conclusion of the women’s omnium, keirin, men’s sprint and men’s Madison.
