Four titles awarded on day two of Collegiate Track Nationals

Indianapolis, Ind. (September 24, 2010) –  On day two of the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships, Marian University continued to prove itself a track cycling powerhouse, earning three of the four national titles up for grabs.

The second day of the competition dodged a bullet with weather as storms that threatened the Midwest earlier in the week passed Indianapolis and broke up over the city in late morning. The strong winds that pushed the storm over the Major Taylor Velodrome, however didn’t pass unnoticed as support staff and riders battened down the hatches for their equipment and riders.

The windy morning session saw the Marian foursome of Kaitlin Antonneau, Rebecca Finley, Elspeth Huyett, and Jacqueline Kurth show off some impressive teamwork, clocking a 4:00.679 over three kilometers to beat out their nearest threat by more than six seconds. Midwestern State’s Loren Eggenschwiler, Natalie Klemko, Jennifer Purcell, and Claire Routledge rode well together to post a 4:06.973 for the silver medal.  Fort Lewis College posted the bronze medal time while Indiana University’s and Colorado State’s squads rounded out the team pursuit podium in fourth and fifth respectively.

During the evening session, competition was tight in the co-ed Team Sprint Competition with mere 100ths of a second variance in the individual team riders’ times, which were oftentimes overshadowed by the strong performances of the anchor leg riders. Marian again showed its strength in the co-ed event with National Pursuit and Kilo Champion,Adam Liebovitz in the second to last lap and former national champion David Williams on the anchor leg. That combo proved to be the deciding factor for the school to add another national title to its tally this week. Leibovitz and Williams were joined by Kaitlin Antonneau, Robert Bush, Sierra Siebenlist, and Alex Wieseler on the top of the podium.

Riding to the silver medal in the team sprint competition was Midwestern State’s Joshua Carter, Matthew Fox, Natalie Klemko, Danny Robertson, Claire Routledge, and Jason Short. Colorado State grabbed the bronze medal while Penn State and Fort Lewis College were fourth and fifth.

In the men’s sprint final of the evening, Indiana University’s Eric Young held off Marian University Freshman Colton Barrett in the final two sprints to win the Stars-and-Stripes jersey. Barrett showed great promise for Marian’s future as he held Young to the rail numerous times before losing control and falling into chase mode before losing by less than a half wheel in the final. Daniel Sullivan (Kutztown University of Pennsylvania) defeated Adam Liebovitz (Marian University) for third while Santiago Velasquez (Colorado State) defeated Matthew Fox (Midwestern State) for the final spot on the podium.

In the women’s points race, Kaitlin Antonneau (Marian) found herself on the top step of the podium yet again, taking the national title ahead of silver and bronze medalists Jennifer Purcell (Midwestern State University) and Jacqueline Kurth (Marian University) while Natalie Klemko (Midwestern State University) and Robin Bauer (University of Wisconsin) rounded out fourth and fifth.

Calmer skies and cooler weather should be a welcome change for the riders as they finish racing on Saturday with the women’s sprint, men’s points race, and men’s team pursuit.
