Final titles awarded at 2011 Mountain Bike Cross-Country Nats

Print Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Boulder, Colo./Subaru-Trek) prevented Todd Wells (Durango, Colo./Specialized) from collecting another title outsprinting the cross-country champion in Sunday’s short track event on the final day of the 2011 USA Cycling Mountain Bike Cross-Country National Championships. Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rabobank-Giant) powered to win her second consecutive women’s pro short track title, while Adam Craig (Bend, Ore./Giant) and Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory Racing) took home pro Super D national titles.
BNSF Pro Women’s Short Track Cross Country race
Katie Compton powers to her second consecutive short track cross-country national title.Chloe Forsman (Tucson, Ariz./BMX) and Judy Freeman (Boulder, Colo./Kenda-Felt) cranked up the pace early and managed to get a gap on the first lap, but it wasn’t long before the reigning champ Compton attacked off the wheel of Kelli Emmett (Colorado Springs, Colo./Giant).
“I got a little gap and just stayed on the gas,” explained Compton. “I felt good today so I thought I’d just give it a go and push the whole time.”
After Compton took control Forsman suffered an untimely flat, removing her from the race. Heather Irmiger (Boulder, CO/Subaru/TREK) and yesterday’s cross-country champ Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, CO/LUNA PRO TEAM) mounted a chase but the a seven-time cyclo-cross national champion’s speed was too much for the superstar cross-country pair. Irmiger won the final lap sprint to take the silver.
“We rode together for about four laps – just kind of feeling each other out and seeing when to make the move,” said Irmiger. “I decided to go ahead and pass her before the dirt started because I felt like the 29er was rockin it on the loose corners. I felt like I had an advantage there, so I just made sure I got in front on the last lap and I held on to it. I’m really stoked.”
BNSF Pro Men’s Short Track Cross Country
Yesterday’s cross-country champ Todd Wells(Durango, Colo./Specialized) jumped out front in the early going of the 20 minute, plus three-lap affair, but, Horgan-Kobelski, Ryan Trebon(Bend, Ore./Kona), Sam Schultz (Missoula, MT/Subaru-Trek), Jeremiah Bishop (Harrisonburg, Va./CANNONDALE FACTORY RACING) and Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash./BMC) were able to hold his wheel. Eventually the lead group split into two leaving Wells, Horgan-Kobelski and Trebon to battle it out in the second half.
Just when it appeared Wells, who rode on the front the majority of the race, would take it home, Horgan-Kobelski attacked and sprinted to the title.
“I did not expect that today so it’s a nice little surprise actually,” said Horgan-Kobelski. “I never saw the front of the race (until the last lap). Todd was riding pretty powerfully, but I knew he was hurting. I figured I was in perfect position (on the final lap) so I got by Trebon going into that off camber climb then came by Todd in the trees and sprinted as hard as I could and did the best I could to control the two-wheel drift. It turned out great.”
Schultz came in chasing hard for fourth and Bishop picked up fifth after a crash on the pavement. Ettinger turned in a strong result in sixth.
BNSF Amateur Short Track Cross-Country
In the men's 15-18 race short track race, Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Durango Devo) collected his second gold medal of the week, posting a time of 21:24. Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Whole Athlete-Specialized) earned the silver medal, nosing out Payson McElveen (Austin, Texas) at the line.
In the women's category 1 race, AliciaRose Pastore (Durango Colo./Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Devo) also earned her second gold of the week, posting a time of 20:52, 10 seconds faster than Helene Drumm (San Anselmo, Calif.). Jena Greaser (Newton, Mass./NorEast Cycling) earned the bronze medal with a time of 21:15.
Jafer Beizer(Conyers, Ga./Tbb Sports) won the men's 19-29 race for the third consecutive year. After the race, Beizer said he dedicated the race to the memory of his recently-passed father.
Beizer's chain dropped on the first turn after the start, creating approximately a 20-second gap between him and the race leaders. He made up that deficit to earn the gold medal, narrowly edging silver medalist Tyler Gauthier (Ishpeming, Mich./Range Mountain Bike Association) at the finish line.
In the men's 30+ short track cross-country race, Ty Kady (Brea, Calif.) grabbed an early lead and won by an :18 margin ahead of Eric Carlson (Ketchum, Idaho/Kryki Sports) and Mark Legg Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Super D
The Super D started the day's races and Adam Craig (Bend, Ore./Rabobank-Giant) and Lea Davison (Jericho, Vt./Specialized Factory Racing) took home the gold.
Craig collected his sixth national title in the Super D by posting a time of 19:37, 1.71 seconds faster than silver medalist Carl Decker (Bend, Ore./Giant) and 16 seconds faster than Mike West (Boulder, Colo./Yeti), who earned the bronze medal.
"Super D is the essence of mountain biking," Craig said. "You have to be fit, but you still get to shred. It's the most entertaining way from the top to bottom."
Davison was nine seconds faster than Allison Mann (Murrieta, Calif.) and nearly 21 seconds faster than Kelli Emmett (Colorado Springs, Colo./Giant Bicycles), who earned the silver and bronze medals.
Mason Bond(Cedar Ridge, Calif./Nevada Union High School Mountain Bike Team) posted the best time among the amateur racers to win the Men 18-and-under category by 6.28 seconds over Bobby Zidek (Novato, Calif./Whole Athlete-Specialized).
Greg Krieger(Cedarburg, Wisc.) topped the men's 19-29 race with a time of 21:49.42 while Billy Damon (Auburn, Calif./Bicycle Emporium) took the gold medal home with a time of 21:33.19. Michael Pastore (Avon, Colo.) won by a narrow .93 seconds in the men's 40-49 category over Stanislaus Bankston (Nevada City, Calif./Bicycle Emporium). The father of Keegan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Whole Athlete-Specialized), who is a rider in the USA Cycling National Development Program, Jordan Swenson (Park City, Utah/Cole Sport) won the men's 50+ category by nearly 40 seconds.
In the women's amateur races, Simone Kastner (Hailey, Idaho/Mud Honey)
Kaylee Blevins(Durango, Colo.) posted the best time of the women's amateur racers and won the 18-and-under category with a time of 23:31.77. Simone Kastner (Hailey, Idaho/Mud Honey) topped the women's 19-29 podium with a time of 25:05.72 while Tara Walhart (San Francisco, Calif.) took the gold medal home in the women's 30-39 category with a time of 25:26.37. Helene Drumm (San Anselmo, Calif.) won the women's 40-49 category with the second-best time among women amateur racers, 24:42.29.
National championship mountain bike racing wrapped up Sunday afternoon after just over 1,00 athletes took more than 1,400 race starts across various categories of cross-country, Super D and short track cross-country racing.
