Elite men’s road race wraps up 2010 Road World Championships
Geelong, Australia (Oct. 3, 2010) – American youngster Tejay Van Garderen (Fort Collins, Colo./Columbia-HTC) made the final selection in the elite men’s road race at the UCI Road World Championships, before Thor Hushovd of Norway went on to win the world title; outsprinting a 25-man lead group. In all, the United States team comes away from these world championships with a pair of medals including a world title.
The U.S. team helps pull back a mid-race break.Ted King (Brentwood, N.H./Cervelo Test Team) was the top American finisher in 73rd place in what played out as a 262.7-kilometer race of attrition. Christian Vande Velde (Lemont, Ill./Garmin-Transitions), Danny Pate (Colorado Springs, Colo./Garmin-Transitions) and Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash./Garmin-Transitions) all finished as a part of the second main group.
“It was a bit of a strange race,” said USA Cycling World Championship Elite Men’s Team Director Mike Sayers. “I think the course dictated how the race went many, many minutes out. I thought our guys rode well as a group. Thought we had some standout performances; Tejay for sure. I think moving forward over the next couple of years those are performances we can build off of.”
Twenty-two year old Van Garderen had a notable performance for the U.S. team, making the final selection with approximately 30-kilometers remaining. The youngster was however forced to abandon before the finish.
“The plan was to help Tyler out, so we were drifting the climbs a little bit,” said Van Garderen. “I was getting a little nervous though because every time we’d do that a group would go off the front. I was thinking this could be a little dangerous so one of the moves I just jumped with and that ended up being the move.”
The last American to win in the elite men’s road race was Lance Armstrong in 1993.
The U.S. team wraps up the 2010 UCI Road World Championships with two medals in the form of gold and bronze; both by Taylor Phinney in the U23 time trial and road race respectively. Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif.), Evelyn Stevens (New York, N.Y.) and Zabriskie all recorded top ten finishes in the time trial while Kathryn Curi-Mattis (Mountain View, Calif./Webcor) was awarded the Tissot Award for the most time spent in the front of the elite women’s road race as was Ben King (North Garden, Va./Trek-Livestrong) in the U23 men’s road race.
