Devo Wrap: More juniors podiums in Belgium

Print (Aug. 21, 2014) – Jack Maddux (Fresno, Calif./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) continued his hot streak in Belgian kermesses with the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP), taking a win and a second-place finish at the Hoelenden-Kortenaken and Herentals, respectively.
JUNIORS MEN’S ROAD
Hoelenden-Kortenaken and Herentals kermesses (K1 Juniors)
Maddux’s win at the Aug. 15 Hoelenden-Kortenaken kermesse in Belgium marked his fifth-straight kermesse win in the last two weeks. Ethan Reynolds (Boise, Idaho/Hot Tubes Development Team) placed ninth at the event, followed by Eric Oien (Escondido, Calif./Monster Media Racing Team) in 10th. Clayton Stone (Anthem, Ariz./Athlete Octane) placed 28th, followed by Tommy Lucas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bear Development Team) and Nick Castellano (Upland, Calif./Team Specialized Racing –NCCF), who tied for 42nd.

The next day, Maddux placed second at the Herentals kermesse, finishing behind Belgian winner Enzo Wouters. Oien finished seventh, Reynolds placed 15th, Stone took 18th, Lucas finished 30th and Castellano placed 34th.

Beveren-Waas and Rumst kermesses (K2 Juniors)
The K2 juniors group rode three Belgian kermesses, starting with the Beveren-Waas on Aug. 13, where Noah Granigan (Cape May Court House, N.J./RACE CF) took his second win in four days, followed by Michael Hernandez (Clermont, Fla./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) in third, David Duquette (Gastonia, N.C./Revolve Residential p/b Pre-Reg.com) in seventh, David Lombardo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Hincapie Development Team) in eighth and Derek Cote (Burlington, Conn./CT Cycling Advancement Program) in 17th.

Two days later, Lombardo placed fifth at the Rumst kermesse, pacing the U.S. riders. Granigan followed up his Aug. 13 win with a sixth-place effort, trailed by Hernandez in 13th, Cote in 14th and Duquette in 41st.

On Aug. 16, Duquette took the win at the Balegem kermesse, while Hernandez, Lombardo and Granigan rounded out the top five with third-, fourth- and fifth-place efforts, respectively. Cote finished 43rd.

Herentals and Werchter kermesses (15-16 Camp B Juniors)
Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF) picked up the win at the Herentals kermesse on Aug. 16, besting teammate Chris Blevins (Durango, Colo./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF), who took second. Sean McElroy (Palmdale, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) finished ninth, followed by Cameron Beard (Bend, Ore./

The next day, McElroy took the win at the Werchter kermesse, followed by Beard in 10th, Blevins in 16th, Jones in 21st, Grant McElroy (Portland, Ore./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF) in 29th and Hecht in 42nd.

U23 MEN’S ROAD
Memorial Henryka Lasaka kermesse
Torey Philipp (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry-Specialized) crossed 21st at the Memorial Henryka Lasaka in Poland on Aug. 16, chalking the best U.S. finish of the day. Colin Joyce (Pocatello, Idaho/California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry Farms- Specialized), Jake King (North Garden, Va./Hincapie Sportswear Development Team), Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) and Tobin Ortenblad (Santacruz, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) also competed.
COMING UP
The juniors program rolls on in Belgium this week with seven events for the K1, K2 and 15-16 Camp B groups. The K1 riders will race the Geetbets, Puurs and Vliermaal kermesses, the K2 riders will compete at the Mere kermesse and the Vlaamse Gewesten, while the 15-16 Camp B riders will race the West Flanders Tour.
