Devo Wrap: Maddux climbs four podiums in Belgium

Print (Aug. 12, 2014) – Jack Maddux (Fresno, Calif./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) enjoyed a tremendous week of cycling with the USA Cycling National Development Program (NDP), winning four Belgian kermesses in eight days.
JUNIORS MEN’S ROAD
Wijer Nieuwerkerken
Jack Maddux took the win at the Wijer Nieuwerkerken kermesse in Belgium on Aug. 3, kicking off a week that featured 13 top-10 finishes for the juniors men. Michael Hernandez (Clermont, Fla./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) placed sixth at the event, followed by Eric Oien (Escondido, Calif./Monster Media Racing Team) in seventh and Clayton Stone (Anthem, Ariz./Athlete Octane) in eighth. Nick Castellano (Upland, Calif./Team Specialized Racing –NCCF) finished 43rd, followed by Ethan Reynolds (Boise, Idaho/Hot Tubes Development Team) and Tommy Lucas (Santa Rosa, Calif./Bear Development Team), who tied for 44th.

Erondegem
Two days later, Maddux stood atop the podium again, this time at the Aug. 5 Erondegem kermesse. Hernandez finished second, Oien took fifth, Reynolds placed sixth, Lucas claimed 20th, Stone finished 29th and Castellano crossed 48th.

Huldenberg
Maddux’s third win of the week came at the Aug. 9 Huldenberg kermesse, where he paced teammates Reynolds and Castellano, who finished second and fourth, respectively. Oien crossed seventh, followed by Stone in 13th and Lucas 36th.

Kortessem
Maddux took his fourth win in eight days at the Kortessem kermesse on Aug. 10. Oien placed 11th, Stone claimed 16th, Lucas took 18th, and Reynolds and Castellano tied for 38th.

Mol Gompel
U.S. riders took two wins and five top-five results at the two Mol Gompel events on Aug. 10. In the men’s juniors race, Noah Granigan (Cape May Court House, N.J./RACE CF) chalked the win, followed by Hernandez in second, Derek Cote (Burlington, Conn./CT Cycling Advancement Program) in 14th, David Lombardo (Crystal Lake, Ill./Hincapie Development Team) in 18th and David Duquette (Gastonia, N.C./Revolve Residential p/b Pre-Reg.com) in 23rd.
In the 15-16 race, Sean McElroy (Palmdale, Calif./Team Specialized Racing) crossed first, pacing Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF) in second, Chris Blevins (Durango, Colo./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF) in fourth, Grant McElroy (Portland, Ore./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF) in eighth and Simon Jones (Milwaukee, Wis./Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club-Hincapie Development Team) in ninth.

MEN’S U23 ROAD
Tour de Namur
Six U.S. U23 riders took on the field at the Belgian Tour de Namur. Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./California Giant Cycling) placed 11th, just 56 seconds off the pace of Belgian winner Sander Cordeel (BEL). Oien also finished fourth for Best Young Rider. Colin Joyce (Pocatello, Idaho/California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry Farms- Specialized) placed 32nd, 7 minutes, 23 seconds off of Cordeel’s time, while Tyler Williams (Shafter, Calif./BMC Development Team) crossed 44th, taking the King of the Mountain jersey. He finished 11 minutes, 33 seconds off the winning pace. Yannick Eckmann (Boulder, Colo./California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry-Specialized) placed 58th, followed by Torey Philipp (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Cycling-California Giant Berry-Specialized) in 80th. Alexsey Vermeulen (Pinckney, Mich./BMC Development Team) also competed.

WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT ROAD
Brugge-Dudzele and Heusden kermesses
Continuing their Belgian kermesse tour, the women’s development road program raced the Aug. 5 Brugge-Dudzele kermesse as well as the Heusden kermesse on Aug. 9. At the Brugge-Dudzele, Heather Fischer (Boulder, Colo./K4 Racing-DNA Cycling p/b K4) led the way for the Americans, taking eighth, while Lauren DeCrescenzo (Boulder, Colo./DNA Cycling) finished 40th and Korina Huizar (Roseville, Calif./Vanderkitten) took 46th. Four days later at the Heusden, Fischer finished 36th, followed by DeCrescenzo in 37th and Huizar in 47th.
