Devo Wrap: International competition resumes

After a brief hiatus to compete in various USA Cycling National Championships, the riders of the USA Cycling National Development Program are returning to international competition. There are a pair of U23 contingents in action in Europe as well as a group of juniors riders competing in Canada.

U23

A group of four riders started contesting the Giro valle d'Aosta, a six-stage race spanning July 16-22 in Italy.

On Monday, they rode a very technical, 3.4-kilometer prologue. Monday's time trial course started with a rolling two kilometers with some 90-degree turns before beginning to go uphill at a seven percent grade along switchbacks to a castle.

Evan Huffman (Elk Grove, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized), who won the U23 time trial national title in Augusta, turned in the best performance, placing 30th, 26 seconds behind Daniele Dall'Oste's (ITA) winning time of 6:23.65. Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Bontrager-Livestrong Team) and Nate Wilson (Elk Grove, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized) placed 40th and 41st, finishing 29 seconds behind Dall'Oste. Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Team Type 1-Development) finished 2:11 behind the leader.

The following group of six riders began contesting the Tour de la Province de Liege Elites et Espoirs:

The five-stage race through Belgium began on July 17 and continues until July 21.

Juniors

The contest spans seven stages and includes approximately 160 riders spread over 22 teams from five different countries around the world.
