JUNIOR WOMEN – EPZ Omloop van Borsele stage race
Summer Moak (Phoenix, Ariz./TWENTY20 Pro Cycling/Sho-Air TWENTY20 Development) wore the sprinters jersey after the second stage and finished an impressive sixth in the final Nations Cup event for Team USA’s junior women.
Moak got off to a fast start in in the 13.5-kilometer individual time trial. Showing good form and matching splits over the first half of the course, Moak finished in fifth place, 17 seconds off the winning time.
On the race’s second stage, a 72.9km jaunt, Moak seized the sprinters jersey and finished in the main field, 28 seconds behind stage winner Amber Van Der Hulst of the Netherlands.
The final stage was a 71.3km ride, and although Moak lost the sprinters jersey, she maintained her top-10 position in the general classification, just 26 seconds back of Van Der Hulst.
Paige Shumskas (Pipersville, Pa./Fearless Femme Racing) finished 13th on the final stage and was 36th (+1:46) in the final standings. Other Team USA riders finishing in the general classification were Alijah Beatty (Washington, Iowa/NorthStar Development) in 51st place (+2:29) and Moriah Swan (Alpine, Calif./Strive Racing) in 102nd (+16:04). Kira Payer (Housatonic, Mass./KMS Cycling-Killington Mountain School) also contested the event.
“These trips with the Junior Women are meant to give opportunity and introduction to the European style of racing and to start the foundation for a bright future as an up-and-coming U.S. athlete,” said U.S. Coach Jack Seehafer. “This last weekend’s race was another great learning opportunity for our Junior Women. For the majority of the group, it was an introduction to European racing, and a great team building event. They had the chance to race as a team for the sprinters jersey, and although they lost, it brought them together as a unit and opened up further discussions on team dynamics.”

U23 MEN – Arno Wallaard Memorial (184k)
The U23 men’s team raced in the very flat and windy Arno Wallaard Memorial in Meerkerk, Netherlands on April 22. Ultimately, the race was decided in the first 20 kilometers when the pack splintered into six different groups.
Zeke Mostov (San Francisco, Calif./Aevolo) rode most of the day in the second group and was the team’s sole finisher in a race that saw only 45 of the original 165 riders complete the course. Mostov finished 34th, 5:46 back of winner Timothy Stevens of Belgium.
Other U.S. riders contesting the race were Alder Martz (Charlotte, N.C./Attaque Team Gusto), Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Rally), Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif./Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis), Gavin Hoover (Manhattan Beach, Calif./VL Technics-Experza-Abutriek Cycling Team) and Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga./AXEON Hagens Berman).
“I’m very glad we did this race as it is something we are very weak on,” said Nate Wilson, U23 manager. “The result was not good, but it will pay off in the future. We will do more of these races until we can be successful in them.”

COMING UP
The U23 men’s team begins the weeklong Tour de Bretagne in France on April 25. Riders scheduled to compete for Team USA are Adrien Costa (Bend, Ore./Axeon Hagens Berman), Will Barta (Boise, Idaho/Axeon Hagens Berman), Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Axeon Cycling), Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman), Sean Bennett (El Cerrito, Calif./Jelly Belly p/b Maxxis) and Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga./AXEON Hagens Berman).
