Day 3 of Masters Track National Championships shortened by rain

Print The 2011 USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships resumed Thursday and awarded national titles in the points race between rain showers that delayed competition and washed out the sprints races at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center in Breinigsville, Pa. The sprint races will resume and be awarded today.

Rita Kacala (Racine, WI/RPM/Hayes Brake Cycling Team) and Bonnie Woodbury (Escondido, CA) recorded unofficial world records for their age groups. Kacala’s time of 13.242 topped the 55+ class while Woodbury’s mark of 14.563 earned the gold medal among 65+ women. For each, Kacala and Woodbury, it marked her third gold medal of the event as each woman won her age group’s time trial and individual pursuit. After collecting a pair of silver medals earlier in the event, Dana Walton (E Norriton, PA/Chester County Cycling Foundation) earned the women’s 40-44 gold medal as did Annabell Holland (Livermore, CA/San Jose Bicycle Club) for the women’s 45-49. The win marks Holland’s fourth gold medal of the event having already struck gold in the individual pursuit, time trial and contributing to a team sprint victory. Lorraine Jarvis’ (San Anselmo, CA/San Jose Bicycle Club) time of 13.577 topped the women’s 50-54 podium. The win marks Jarvis’ second appearance on the top step of the podium after contributing to winning the team sprint. Jarvis had also won a silver medal in the scratch race and a bronze in the individual pursuit.
In the men’s 200 meter Flying TT qualification races, Chip Berezny (Coopersburg, PA/Lehigh Wheelmen Assoc/Bike Line) was first in the 60-64 with a time of 12.455, the fastest among the men. Mark Rodamaker (Los Altos, CA/LTO Velo) was just behind Berezny with a time of 12.461. Ronald Hargrave (Colorado Springs, CO/Hammer Racing Team-TVG LTD.) also qualified first for men 65-69 after registering a 12.642. Earl Henry (Pinellas Park, FL/Florida Velo) finished first in the 70+ group by nearly a half second, posting a time of 12.949.
Soon after the first race of the evening session started, the skies parted and the ensuing races were delayed by rain for approximately a half hour. The men’s points races resumed and six national champions were crowned. James Host (Plainfield, IL/Pact- DISH Network Cycling) added a third gold medal to his haul from the event by collecting 13 points during his race to top the 55-59 podium. Andrew Crater (Asheville, NC/AeroCat Cycling) picked up his first medal of the event winning the 30-34 contest. Stephen Pelaez (San Francisco, CA/Bell Lap Racing) totaled 27 points to earn his first gold medal of the event. Joseph Wentzell (Philadelphia, PA/QCW Cycling) won the 40-44 contest with 19 points while Darin Marhanka (Pickens, SC/Piedmont Orthopedic AssociatesCycling Team) recorded 16 points to win the 45-49 competition. Christopher Regan’s (Washington, DC/Saroff Racing Team) 27 points were four points better than silver medalist Bruce Donaghy (Allentown, PA/Morgan Stanley Cycling Team/Morgan Stanley Smith Barney/Specialized) to win the 50-54 race.
Friday’s competition will start earlier than originally scheduled to accommodate the remaining sprint races. The remaining sprint races begin at 8 a.m. before resuming the regularly-scheduled flying TT and sprint races.
