Daniel's gutsy effort comes up shy of Worlds result

  
  


(Oct. 13, 2016) – Greg Daniel (Englewood, Colo./Axeon Hagens Berman) motored a 150km breakaway before being caught in the final 10km of the U23 men’s road race at the 2016 UCI Road World Championships in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday.

Daniel, the 2016 U.S. National Champion, led out a break forced by the Americans early on and drove the group for 150 of the 166km contest. The group was caught with just less than 10km to go and he was dropped off the back of the pack, finishing 126th in 3:47:18.
 
Kristoffer Halvorsen (NOR) outsprinted a group of 48 to take the Rainbow Jersey in 3:40:53, followed immediately by Pascal Ackermann (GER) and Jakub Mareczko (ITA), who were credited with the same time.
 
Teammates Colin Joyce (Pocatello, Idaho/Axeon Hagens Berman) and Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman) finished with the front group in 16th and 37th, respectively, while Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman) took 54th in 3:41:01 and Geoffrey Curran (Tustin, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman) crossed 116th in 3:45:54.

The junior men’s and women’s road races highlight action at Day 6 of the Road World Championships Friday, as Cameron Beard (Bend, Ore./Team Specialized Racing-NCCF), Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga./Holowesko-Citadel Racing Team p/b Hincapie Racing), Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team), Bjorn Larson (Duluth, Minn./Holowesko-Citadel Racing Team p/b Hincapie Racing), time trial champion Brandon McNulty (Phoenix, Ariz./LUX-Stradling p/b Specialized) and Tyler Stites (Tucson, Ariz./El Grupo Youth Cycling) challenge the men’s race, while Hannah Arensman (Rutherford College, N.C./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling), Megan Heath (Alpharetta, Ga./Frazier Cycling), Summer Moak (Foothill Ranch, Calif./TWENTY16 Pro Cycling) and Skylar Schneider (West Allis, Wis./ISCorp Cycling p/b SmartChoice MRI) take on the women’s contest.
