Personal

At about 10 years of age, Dana Feiss rode her bicycle on the roads of Telford, Pa., with her family for fun and fitness. She competed at a varsity level on her high school track and field team, running sprints and hurdles. She reached district finals as a freshman, sophomore and junior before giving up running to focus on cycling as a senior.

Prior to her senior year, Feiss participated in introductory track clinics at the velodrome in Trexlertown, Pa., and was hooked. A local coach, May Britt Hartwell, identified racing potential in Feiss and encouraged her to pursue it.

Feiss trained seriously to compete in track cycling and saw results quickly. The next year, she placed second among Juniors women 17-18 in the Time Trial at the 2007 USA Cycling Junior Track National Championships. She added four silver medals, including three as a rookie in the under-23 category at the 2008 national championships.

Feiss finally broke through and earned her first gold medal in the Sprint and Keirin at the 2010 national championships and hasn't looked back. She earned two more in the same races in 2011 to help springboard her to international success. Feiss placed third in the Keirin at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

When she is not on her bike, Feiss has several hobbies. She enjoys cooking, reading and writing. She maintains her own blog and takes on freelance writing projects. She also works at a local bike shop, where she relishes the relaxed atmosphere, but still feels productive using her cycling knowledge.

She credits each of her coaches for different aspects of her cycling success. "Each coach that I’ve worked with over the past four years has helped me with some aspect. My first coach, May Britt Hartwell, was the one who saw my potential and pushed me through those rough beginner phases of bike racing. This whole thing is her fault, really. She then passed my along to Connie Paraskevin and Tanya Dubnicof – both helped me refine my skills. My current coach, Jamie Staff, is awesome in helping learn as I go through the world of international racing."
