Starting from gate 2 in the final next to defending world champion Caroline Buchanan of Australia, the 21-year-old Crain stayed on Buchanan's wheel throughout the race but was unable to find a way to move past the rainbow jersey. Venezuela's Stefany Hernandez followed Crain across the line to claim third place.
Crain's American teammates Dani George (Palmdale, Calif.) and Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, IL/Factory GT Bicycles) did not advance past the semifinal round and finished 13th and 15th, respectively. U.S. national champion Alise Post (Saint Cloud, Minn./Redline Bicycles) suffered a knee injury in practice on Friday and was unable to compete in the event.
In elite men's racing, Connor Fields (Henderson, Nev./Chase BMX) was the lone American in the main event, crossing the line in sixth place. Fields, starting the final from gate 6, was caught on the outside heading into the first turn and could not make up the ground on the other riders in front of him. Defending world champion Liam Phillips of Great Britain thrilled his home crowd by winning the men's final. Anthony Dean (AUS) finished second and Tory Nyhaug (CAN) took third to join Phillips on the podium.
Other U.S. riders in the elite men's divisions were Corben Sharrah (Tucson, Ariz./Haro) and Jared Garcia (Victorville, Calif./SupercrossBMX.com) tied for ninth place, Barry Nobles (Sun City, Calif./DK Bicycles) in 13th, Steven Cisar (Altadena, Calif./Avent Bombshell) in 17th, David Herman (Wheat Ridge, Colo./ Free Agent/Rockstar) in 21st, Tanner Sebesta (Austin, Texas) and Collin Hudson (Longmont, Colo./Redline Bicycles) tied for 33rd, and Sean Gaian (Santee, Calif./Factory GT Bicycles) in 49th.
