100 Young Riders Set to Ride in the Breakaway Benefit!

Cyclists and families from all over New England are looking forward to the April 25th event. So far, 87 junior riders have registered for the non-competitive event. The Breakaway Benefit is part of the CCAP's first quarter initiative, "ProjeCT100". ProjeCT 100’s goal is to field over 100 junior-aged riders, from 10-18 years old, at each of the CCAP’s three premiere cycling events throughout the Spring season; The CCAP Breakaway Benefit in Middletown, the Winding Trail’s Fat Tire Classic, a mountain bike race in Farmington, and the CCNS Kermis, a road racing event in East Hartford.

The support from municipalities and schools has been overwhelmingly positive. For example, in response to recent CCAP school outreach events at the high school and local bike shops in the town of Greenwich, the Old Greenwich Riverside Community Center recently introduced a summer cycling program with support and direction from the CCAP. With 12 riders already signed up after just weeks from the announcement of the new program, the team has already sold out and a waiting list is growing. Local USAC cycling coach Clare Zecher says, “I am so excited to be coaching this youth team because this will stay with them the rest of their lives. These youth will be more confident, more open to new things, and of course have a lifelong outlet for fun. All of this will be because of a bike, and a coach who cares.”

The CCAP’s Breakaway Benefit is a cornerstone fundraising event for the organization, which supports the group’s outreach and programming throughout the year. It promises fun for all, with the option of two road ride distances, 60 and 25 mile, as well as a beautiful mountain bike loop.
