Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 17, 2012) -- USA Cycling is excited to announce the winners of its 2012 “Club of the Year” awards! Three clubs earned overall “Club of the Year” honors in divisions I, II, and III and an additional eight clubs earned special awards in the junior/interscholastic, masters, women’s, new club, track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross, and collegiate categories.
 
In addition to bragging rights, the winning clubs will receive a trophy and complimentary renewal fees for 2013. Congratulations to our winners!
 
Division I – Team Dayton Bicycling (Dayton, Ohio)
Division II – Northwest Cycling Club (Houston, Texas)
Division III – Ghisallo Foundation (Austin, Texas)

Masters - Cross Creek Cycling (Fayetteville, N.C.)
Women – Naked Women’s Racing p/b TriBella (Boulder, Colo.)

Winning clubs were chosen for exhibiting excellence in several areas including race promotion, membership composition, instructional clinics and seminars, club activities, charity work, and race performance. Here’s a break-down of what our 2012 Clubs of the Year have been up to:
 
Division I – Team Dayton Bicycling
Team Dayton Bicycling took top honors in Division I after scoring major points for rider development, clinics and seminars, and its mission statement.  With 120 members, the Ohio-based team provides quality, year-round development and training programs for all race categories in a family-friendly atmosphere. Events the club promotes include the Vandevort Corner Road Race, Tour de Burg Criterium, and Caesar’s Ford Cyclo-cross Race. Additionally, the group offers plenty of opportunities through racing clinics, training rides, and a spring training camps, as well as through community activities like the Southwest Ohio Indoor Time Trial Series and the local Fourth of July parade.  Visit the Team Dayton Bicycling website.
 
Division II – Northwest Cycling Club

Houston’s Northwest Cycling Club was the overall winner in Division II with major points scored for race promotion, clinics and seminars, club activities, and rider development. The group puts on the Chappell Hill Bank Classic and the Bear Creek Criterium Series. The club made great contributions to the community in 2012, donating over $100,000 towards initiatives like Huntsville State Park trails development  or to organizations like the Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department. One of the club’s primary missions is to develop junior talent. These efforts are clearly paying off with success stories like Lawson Craddock and Cristin Walker. Division III – Ghisallo Foundation
In its second year of existence, the Ghisallo Foundation took home the overall “Club of the Year” award for Division III. The group earned a lot of points for race promotion, clinics and seminars, and club activities. A small club with a diverse range of programs, Ghisallo accomplished a lot in 2012, including developing its women’s team and growing its community service program. Recognized by the Austin Cycling Association for its work during Bike to Work Month, Keep Austin Beautiful, and its club clean-ups, it looks like the Ghisallo Foundation will be making a mark on central Texas cycling for years to come. Junior/Interscholastic - Team Velosport/ Sho- Air/ Rock ‘n Road
For the second straight year, Team Velosport/Sho-Air/Rock ‘n Road took the prize in the junior division. The 46-member team scored high in the areas of race promotion, coaching and mentoring, and club activities.  Based in Irvine, Calif., Team Velosport was quite busy in 2012, promoting events like the Curt Sutliff Memorial Santiago Canyon TT Series, the SCNCA Elite, Masters, & Juniors ITT Championships, the SCCA Team Time Trial Championships, the Ladera Ranch Grand Prix, and the Spooky Kross Weekend. Additionally, the club put on its fourth annual Sho-air Rock ‘n Road Junior Development Camp with the goal of simulating the experience of a USA Cycling Junior Development Camp. Club members also benefitted from velodrome sessions, workout sessions, team rides, elite team rides, a European race trip, team BBQs and picnics, a team ride to the Tour of California Stage 7, and so many other unique opportunities. Masters - Cross Creek Cycling
For the third year in a row, North Carolina-based Cross Creek Cycling has taken the win in the masters category. Thanks to the club’s active recruitment efforts, 2012 saw the club’s membership increase from 199 to 218 members. Not only did the group increase its membership, but it puts great effort into its cycling rehabilitation program for wounded veterans. Women – Naked Women’s Racing p/b TriBella

Boulder-based Naked Women’s Racing p/b TriBella took top honors in the women’s category after scoring big points for recruitment efforts, the coaching available to its members, and its success in creating a positive image of women in cycling. Twenty-five riders strong in its second year, the group also makes its mark on the community with significant contributions to National Ride for Reading Week, Heels on Wheels, and the Women’s Summit for Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado. Best New Club – East Aurora Racing Club
As a first-year club, East Aurora Racing Club managed to promote three races in 2012 - ReCycle Individual Time Trial, East Aurora Road Race, and Colden Cross – all of which benefitted local charities.The club’s 20 riders also benefit, with the club giving them access to individualized coaching services through Plan2Peak Coaching. Track – Rubicon Cycling LLC: Project London 2012
In the “Track Club of the Year” contest, Rubicon Cycling LLC (Vancouver, Wash.) took top honors for the second consecutive year for its creation and management of the elite track cycling team, Project London 2012. The squad consists of Kevin Mansker, Michael Blatchford, Daniel Walker, Jimmy Watkins, Dean Tracy, and T.J. Mathieson. rovides coaching, training support, bike fitting, nutritional counseling, sport psychology, and skills training. This year, the group saw its development efforts pay off big time as one of its members, Ms. Kate Courtney, became the first-ever junior women’s world cup winner from the U.S.  Community outreach is also a fundamental part of this group’s mission. It’s a membership requirement that each rider participate in habitat restoration and trail maintenance, volunteering for registration at the non-profit Marin Century, and assisting/mentoring at middle and high school development camps. Cyclo-cross – Snakebite Racing
aking the award in the cyclo-cross category was Snakebite Racing out of Lakewood, Ohio. The club scored big points in the recruitment, event promotion, member upgrade, and club activity categories. Races organized by Snakebite included Brooklyn Cyclo-cross and Cascade Park Cyclo-cross. The club was also able to put a big focus on recruitment by providing mentors to new and young cyclo-cross racers. Their efforts resulted in the roster growing from 16 to 21 in 2012. Collegiate – MIT Cycling
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology won the top honor in the collegiate category. The members of MIT Cycling have an average GPA of 3.69. Not only that, but they offer Bicycle Maintenance, Advanced Bicycle Maintenance, and Wheel Building classes to other students during MIT’s January Independent Activities Period. The club employs institute-wide recruitment for both active and prospective students, maintaining a sizeable presence at the campus preview weekends and also with stories in the school newspaper and on the school website. MIT cycling also finds time for weekly club rides, winter training camp, race watch parties, and its “most aggressive rider” competition.  Visit the MIT Cycling webpage.
