Compton wins bronze in Cyclo-cross World Cup #3

Print The Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) Cyclo-cross World Cup season continued over the weekend in Koksijde, Belgium with American Katie Compton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Rabobank) earning bronze in the elite women’s race. Compton was one of eight Americans who contested the World Cup’s third round over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and gained a preview of January’s World Championship course.
Compton (R) stands atop the podium with Vos (L) and Van Den Brand.Compton, who won the opening round of the World Cup in October, did not recover enough from a weak start in the sandy terrain to catch Daphny Van Den Brand (NED/AA Drink-Leontien.NL Cycling Team) or reigning world champ Marianne Vos (NED/Nederland Bloeit) who finished one, two. The seven-time USA Cycling Cyclo-cross national champion did, however, manage to drop Sanne Van Passen (NED) and ride comfortably into third. With three of seven elite women’s World Cup races down, Compton currently sits third in the overall series standings.
Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Crankbrothers-The Race Club) and 19 year-old Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wisc./Cannondale-Cyclo-crossWorld.com) finished 17th and 18th, respectively, in the elite women’s race on the same course that will host the World Championships in January. Christine Vardaros (Wyckoff, N.J./Baboco Cycling Team) also finished 29th for the U.S.
Jeremy Powers(Easthampton, Mass./Team Rapha Focus) was the only American to contest the elite men’s race, finishing 32nd, in six minutes off the pace of winner Sven Nys (BEL/Landbouwkrediet).
Zach McDonald(Bainbridge Island, Wash./Ralpha Focus) finished just 1:15 off the winning pace in the U23 men’s contest in 17th. Cody Kaiser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./California Giant Berry Farms-Specialized), one of several riders attending the event as a part of USA Cycling’s National Development Program, completed the World Championship course in 52nd, just under seven minutes off the pace. Luke Keough (Sandwich, Mass./ Champion System p/b Keough Cyclocross) got off to a great start, riding in fifth place in the U23 men’s event, before crashing and eventually dropping out.
The lone American in the junior men’s contest Andrew Dillman (Fairdale, Ky./Bob’s Red Mill) was 17th, just over three minutes off the pace.
The next World Cup contest is slated for Dec. 4 in Igorre, Spain.
