Compton secures overall World Cup victory with silver in Rome

Rome, Italy (January 6, 2013) – Katie Compton
(Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective) secured her overall victory in the 2012-2013 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup on Sunday with a second-place effort in the penultimate round in Rome.
 
With 390 points, Compton leads Nikki Harris’s (GBR) 254 points in the overall World Cup standings going into the final round which will take place January 20 in the Netherlands. Compton also won rounds in Plzen, Koksijde, Roubaix, and Namur, and she finished second in Tabor and in Heusden-Zolder.
 
In Rome, Compton finished 24 seconds behind winner Marianne Vos (NED) who completed the course in a time of 39:38. Grabbing the third spot on the podium was Katerina Nash (CZE/Luna Pro Team). Also putting in a strong effort for the red, white and blue was Amy Dombroski (Boulder, Colo./Young Telenet-Fidea Cycling Team) who placed 16th, two minutes and 55 seconds off the winning pace.
 
In addition to the elite women’s field, the junior men’s contest also featured American talent. U.S. rider Logan Owen (Bermerton, Wash./Team Redline) barely missed out on the podium with his fourth-place effort. Owen has had a phenomenal year on the world cup circuit having also recorded a second-place, third-place, and a pair of fifth-places. He currently sits in second in the overall standings going into the final round.
 
Owen finished one minute and 11 seconds off the winning pace set up  Matthieu van der Poel (NED) in 38:49. Grabbing the silver and bronze medals were Gioele Bertolini (ITA) and Martijn Budding (NED).
 
Also racing for the United States in the junior event were Curtis White (Delanson, N.Y./Hot Tubes Development Cycling Team) in 27th and Spencer Downing (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Cross Team) in 30th.
