Compton extends World Cup lead with win in Koksijde on Saturday

Koksijde, BEL (November 23, 2013) – Katie Compton
(Colorado Springs, Colo./Trek Cyclocross Collective) extended her lead in the UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup today when she again stood on the top step of the podium after racing to victory on the beaches of Koksijde in Belgium.
 
Completing the event with a time of 43:42, the American crossed the finish line ahead of second- and third-place finishers Sanne Cant (BEL) and Nikki Harris (GBR) who finished over a minute behind Compton.
 
Compton went into the race ranked number one in the world cup standings after a  gold medal performance in round two and her silver medal ride in round one. She now sits on top with 170 points compared to the 140 points held by second-ranked Nikki Harris.

Two other women donned the red, white and blue in Koksijde today. Crystal Anthony (Beverly, Mass./Team Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies) finished in 17th,  five minutes and 51 seconds off of Compton's pace, and Christine Vardaros (Wyckoff, NJ/BABOCO Cycling Team) placed 29th, one lap down.
 
U23 Men
 
In his first season in the U23 ranks, Logan Owen (Bremerton, Wash./Team Redline) raced to 16th place on Saturday as an improvement over his 21st-place efforts in rounds one and two. Owen finished 2:24 off the winning pace set by cyclo-cross strong man Mathieu Van der Poel (NED). Claiming the silver and bronze medals were Laurens Sweeck (BEL) and Gianni Vermeersch (BEL).
 
Junior Men
 
In the junior men's competition, Josey Weik (Wrenshall, Minn./Red Zone Cycling) was the top placed American in 21st place and was followed over the line by compatriot Liam Earl (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS) who placed 33rd. The podium was swept by Belgian riders Kobe Goosens, Yannick Peeters, and Thijs Aaerts.
 
Elite Men
 
In the elite men's race, Belgian Albert Niels took a convincing win over silver and bronze medalists Francis Mourey (FRA) and Philipp Walsleben (GER). The lone rider for the USA, Jonathan Page (Northfield, N.H./Fuji-Spy-Competitive Cyclist) was 31st, six minutes off the winning time.
 
The UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup will resume in a month with round four in Namur, Belgium on Dec. 22.
