Collegiate Track Nationals begin Thursday

The 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships promise to be extremely competitive.
The host school, Marian University, has earned 13 collegiate track national titles since 1995, but this year promises stiff competition. Midwestern State University, Pennsylvania State University, Fort Lewis College, Lees-McRae College and Lindsey Wilson are all viable contenders for the Division I omnium. Appalachian State University, proven contenders in road, mountain bike and Cyclo-cross disciplines, is also a threat on the track.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which won the team omnium in the 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships in Madison in May, has secured the last three Division II omniums on the track. Their toughest competition is expected to come from DePauw and Army, which is sending the second-most riders, 14, to the event. Also among the formidable foes in Division II competition are Cumberland University and the team omnium winner from the 2011 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships, Mars Hill College.
The three-day event will crown collegiate men’s and women’s national titlists in time trial, team pursuit, team sprint, sprint and points race. This year, points are awarded to the top 30 finishers of an event and individuals can enter all four events, allowing schools with fewer riders to tally points in more races.
Among the individuals registered are Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Marian University), who won the men’s Division I criterium in Madison and is a bonafide threat in the time trial, and Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Pennsylvania State University), who earned a bronze medal in the one-kilometer at the 2011 Junior Track World Championships after earning a bronze in the keirin at the 2010 Junior Track World Championships. Among the women expected to compete are Missy Erickson (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College), who finished fifth in the women’s omnium at the 2010 USA Cycling Collegiate Track National Championships, and Rachel Warner (Luray, Va./Lees-McRae College), who won the 3-kilometer time trial and placed sixth in the women’s omnium in 2010.
