The first year in Sun Valley, the event warmed up on Thursday with non-national championship category 2 and 3 national competition races.

Seventy category 3 riders traversed the 12.5-kilometer course to start the day’s racing on a cool, but comfortable morning. The riders were broken up into age groups and released onto the course with one-minute intervals between each wave. Garrett Gerchar (Boulder, Colo.), who estimated he passed 10 riders, posted the best time of the morning session as the 15-year-old finished in 49:23 to win the 15-18 category 3 division.

“It’s a loose, steep and technical course, which I really like,” Gerchar said. “There’s a really fun, beautiful downhill. It’s nice and rolling. There are not a lot of drops. You can get your speed up. The only real problem is there are a lot of really tight switchbacks.”

Over 150 category 2 riders navigated the course in the second session and Chris Ellis (Bellingham, Wash./Cycling Northwest) posted the best time of the afternoon, traversing 15.25 kilometers in just 53:55.

National championship mountain bike racing gets underway on Friday with the junior and under-23 cross-country national championship races, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Sun Valley Resort in Ketchum, Idaho.
