Cat 2 & 3 downhill races kick off 2013 Gravity MTB Nationals in Angel Fire

Angel Fire, N.M. (August 2, 2013) — Racing began Friday at the 2013 USA Cycling Gravity Mountain Bike National Championships with downhill competitions for category 2 and 3 riders. Under sunny skies at the Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico, fourteen separate ages classes between the two categories took to the downhill course.

Category 3 Races

The category 3 men were the first to head out from the start ramp. Mateo Ortegon (Marietta, Ga./Cycle Youth) rode to victory in the 15-18 category with the fastest time of all cat 3s, posting a 6:46.635. Andres Brizeno (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Jesse Percifull (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned wins for the host state in the 19-29 and the 30-39 men’s groups, respectively. Kyle Landrith (Flagstaff, Ariz.) topped the men’s 40+ group, while Makenzie Kjaer (Aptos, Calif.) took home a gold medal in the women’s 15-18 downhill.

Category 2 Races

Albuquerque riders represented well in the first three cat 2 races of the day with Triton Nelson (Albuquerque, N.M.) taking first in the men’s 15-18 race, Jake Rehfeld (Albuquerque, N.M.) setting the top time in the men’s 19-24 race, and Chuan Banh (Albuquerque, N.M.) earning the win in the men’s 25-29 contest.

The fastest time of the day was set by Jason Fedo (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.), who crossed the line at 6:20.080 to top the men’s 30-34 group. Eric Sunderland (Longmont, Colo.) scored the top time in the men’s 35-39 race, while Henning Plesner (Golden, Colo.) and Andrew Clarke (Redmond, Wash.) won the 40-49 men’s race and the 50+ men’s race, respectively.

Two women’s races concluded the day, with Aurelie Cannella (Telluride, Colo.) riding to victory in the 19-29 cat 2 competition and Sabrina Norton (Golden, Colo.) finishing first in the 30-39 race.

Dual Slalom Finals on Saturday

Today’s downhill races were non-championship, so the first Stars-and-Stripes jerseys will be handed out tomorrow when the dual slalom finals are held. Those competitions begin at 1 p.m. with the age group classes. The professional dual slalom races are schedule to start at 4:30 p.m. Qualifying runs were held today for all dual slalom categories.
