U.S. cyclist Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo./Exergy Twenty12) finished 10th overall in the women’s omnium competition at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday.

Higgins was in ninth position after the first day of omnium competition on Saturday saw her place 12th in the flying lap, sixth in the points race, and ninth in the elimination race. On Sunday, she posted a 12th-place result in the individual pursuit, 10th place in the scratch race, and a ninth-place finish in the 500-meter time trial to put her 10th overall in the 19-rider field. The 2012 Olympic champion Laura Trott of Great Britain won the gold medal, with Australia’s Ashlee Ankudinoff taking silver and Russia’s Tamara Balabolina claiming the bronze medal.

"My timed events were not as fast as they normally are, but I felt I raced smarter in the mass start racing than I have in the past,” said Higgins. “Linking the two together is the key and that's the beauty of the omnium. To race against several athletes who competed at the London Olympics was an honor and made me even more inspired than normal, and racing at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome was amazing. The spectators are so knowledgeable and excited about the sport. A big shout out to the American fans that were loud enough among the bunch that I heard them cheering for me."

Higgins was the lone American racer at the event and is now ranked seventh in the omnium World Cup standings after two events with eight points. Trott and Australia’s Isabella King are tied atop the standings with 12 points apiece.

The 2012-13 UCI Track Cycling World Cup will continue with the third and final round in Aguascalientes, Mexico, Jan. 17-19, 2013.
