Cairns, Australia (September 10, 2017) –  Aaron Gwin (Wildomar, Calif./The YT Mob) clocked a 3:28.623 on his descent of the dusty downhill course in Cairns to bring home a bronze medal for Team USA on the final day of the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships.
 
With the conclusion of the downhill competitions, the 2017 Mountain Bike World Championships are now in the books. Team USA rode off with two medals. In addition to Gwin’s bronze, Kate Courtney (Kentfield, Calif./Specialized Factory Racing) came back from an early crash to take silver in the U23 women’s cross-country on Saturday.
 
Six other Americans also contested the elite men’s downhill contest on Sunday with Neko Mulally (Pisgah Forest, NC/ The YT Mob) finishing 19th and Bruce Klein (Altadena, Calif./KHS) finishing 20th. Luca Shaw (Hendersonville, N.C./Santa Cruz Syndicate) was 26th, Eliott Jackson (Westlake Village, Calif./Giant Factory Off-Road Team) was 28th, Dakotah Norton (Atlas, Mich./Morpheus) was 45th, and Charlie Harrison (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./Intense Factory Racing)was 60th,
 
Louc Bruni (FRA) took the world title with Michael Hannah (FRA) getting the silver.
 
Nikolas Nestoroff (San Marcos, Calif./Intense Factory Racing)grabbed a top-ten finish with eighth place in the junior men’s contest when he descended the course in 3:44.664 compared to the 3:37.796 posted by winner Matt Walker (GBR). Devin Kjaer (Aptos, Calif.) was 24th, Aidan Casner (Montpelier, Vt./Eastern States Cup North American Downhill Team) was 26th, Damon Sedivy (Kalispell, Mont.) was 27th, David Kahn (Putnam Valley, NY/IJ Racing-Intense Cycles) was 32nd.
 
In the junior women’s contest, Kaytlin Melvin (Sammamish, Wash./Sweetlines JR Racing) was the top rider for the USA completing her time test in 4:47.419. Melanie Chappaz (FRA) won the world title in a time of 4:28.617. Samantha Kingshill (Sacramento, Calif./College Cyclery-Vittoria), Mazie Hayden (Pitsfield, Vt./KMS Cycling-Kilington Mountain School), and Samantha Soriano (Littleton, Colo./Honey Stinger-ODI)also raced for the USA and placed 8th, 9th, and 10th.
