Bobby Lea wins bronze medal in omnium at round one of the Track World Cup

  
  


Guadalajara, Mexico (November 7, 2014)Bobby Lea (Mertztown, Pa./Custom Velo) claimed the first-ever men's omnium World Cup medal for the USA on Sunday when he finished third at round one of the 2014-2015 UCI Track World Cup in Guadalajara.
 
After a stellar first-place performance in the individual pursuit on Saturday, Lea also made a solid sixth-place effort in the elimination race and was tenth in the scratch race. On Sunday, the two-time Olympian posted a sixth-place time in the kilometer time trial to move him into third overall with only two events remaining. Finishing seventh in the flying lap, he moved down to fourth but pulled himself back onto the podium with an 11th-place finish in the final event of the omnium – the points race.
 
Reigning world champion in the women's omnium, Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./Performance United – FELT) finished sixth in the women's six-event competition. Hammer also won her individual pursuit on Saturday before placing fifth in the scratch race and 15th in the elimination race. On Sunday, the seven-time world champion and two-time Olympic medalist was ninth in the 500-meter time trial before moving into fourth in the omnium standings with a fourth-place effort in the flying lap. In the sixth and final event, the points race, Hammer was 13th to end her omnium competition in sixth place.
 
Two other Americans competed on Sunday. Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa./Custom Velo) placed 31st in the men's sprint qualification round which was not quite high enough to move on, and Mandy Marquardt (Allentown, Pa./Team Novo Nordisk) was eliminated from the women's keirin when she placed second in her first round repechage.
