Arielle Martin
(Pleasant Grove, Utah/Intense BMX) was voted third among females in the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Athlete of the Month contest for September.

The BMXer was the fastest out of the gate in the final race of the elite women’s main during the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup final in Chula Vista at the end of September. She took the first straight and went on to a convincing win. The veteran American rider, who just missed the Olympic team in 2008, was extremely happy to win a Supercross title in her home country.

Martin ended the Supercross World Cup season ranked fifth overall.

Track & field athlete Lashinda Demus (Palmdale, Calif.) and wrestler Jordan Burroughs (Sicklerville, N.J.) were selected as the U.S. Olympic Committee's Athletes of the Month while the U.S. women's track & field 4x100m relay team was awarded Team of the Month honors.

In the female category, bowler Shannon Pluhowsky (Kettering, Ohio) finished second in the voting while Martin was third. On the men's side, triathlete Lukas Verzbicas (Orland Hills, Ill.) was second and track & field athlete Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.) took third. Finally, in the team selection, the U.S. women's eight rowing team placed second, followed by the U.S. world women's bowling championship team.

Each National Governing Body may nominate one female, one male and one team per discipline. A voting panel selects the winners from the pool of nominees, with online fan voting via Twitter accounts for 10 percent of the total vote.
