Antonneau's third omnium win caps USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nats

Ogden, Utah (May 5, 2013) -- The 2013 USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships concluded Sunday with four road races at Pineview Reservoir. In all, 400 riders from over 100 schools around the country competed in the event.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) won the Division II team omnium after earning 94 points in three events. Colorado Mesa University, which entered Sunday’s road races with the lead, finished in second place, 100 points behind MIT. Brevard College finished 21 points out of second place and only two points ahead of fourth-place Mars Hill College. Whitman College collected 273 points to place fifth.

Individual Omnium
Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Marian University) won the Division I men’s individual omnium. Leibovitz placed second in the criterium and road race to collect 289 points, 65 more points than Renan Maia (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College). Brandon Feehery (Homewood, Ill./Lindenwood University) collected 163 to place third while Ryan Sullivan (Nashville, Tenn./Cumberland University) finished 24 points behind Feehery and three points ahead of fifth-place William Buick (Boulder, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder).

Matt Lyons (Denver, Colo./University of Denver), who also finished second in the criterium and road race, recorded 278 points to win the Division II men’s omnium. The winner of Saturday’s criterium, Michael Mulvihill (San Francisco, Calif./Duke University) finished in second place, 48 points behind Lyons. Kit Recca (Golden, Colo./Colorado School of Mines) registered 196 points to finish third. The Division II men’s road race winner, Cameron Cogburn (Cambridge, Mass./Massachusetts Institute of Technology), placed fourth in the omnium with 177 points, 24 points ahead of Matthew Rinehart (Durham, N.C./Duke University).

After a stellar weekend of racing, Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis./Marian University) won her third consecutive Division I women’s omnium. Antonneau edged her teammate, Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif.), by only six points. Antonneau and Rivera alternated wins this weekend. Rivera won the criterium on Saturday while Antonneau placed second. They switched in today’s road race as Antonneau narrowly edged Rivera at the finish line in the road race. Justine Boddy (Loveland, Colo./Colorado State University) finished third, only 14 points ahead of Abigail Mickey (Aspen, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder). Mickey’s teammate, Nicolle Bruderer (Boulder, Colo.) finished fifth, 18 points out of fourth place.

Laura Ralston (Cambridge, Mass./Massachusetts Institute of Technology) recorded eight more points than Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College) to claim her second Division II women’s omnium national championship in three years. Ralston placed second in today’s road race and third in Saturday’s criterium to collect 274 points. Ralston’s teammate, Christina Birch (Somerville, Mass.) finished third, 34 points behind Zaveta and 11 points ahead of Rose Long (New York, N.Y./Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai). Tanelle Berard (Clive, Iowa/University of Northern Colorado) finished fifth with 196 points.

Road Races
The 125-kilometer Division I men's road race was a very animated contest between 177 of the country’s best collegiate road racers. As the temperature approached 60 degrees, the peloton spent very little time all together. Several breakaways were launched, but usually were quickly reeled back in, until Howard Grotts (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College) attacked on the last climb. The winner of multiple mountain bike cross-country national championships drilled it up the climb and opened a gap of nearly one minute at the top of the climb. Two competitors from Texas schools, Cody Foster (The Woodlands, Texas/Texas A&M University) and Justin Laue (Austin, Texas/University of Texas at Austin), chased, but they were unable to reach Grotts. Adam Leibovitz (Indianapolis, Ind./Marian University), who was the runner up in Saturday's criterium, won the field sprint to finish second ahead of Foster, Laue and Renan Maia (Durango, Colo./Fort Lewis College). The field finished 1:33 behind Grotts.

“I almost expected them to come right around the corner and blow right by me because descending on the road is definitely not my strong point,” Grotts said. “Luckily, I had built up enough of a lead on the climb to survive. I had a little bit of an advantage because I didn't have to race the couple days before and a lot of them did the criterium and the time trial. This was the focus for Fort Lewis and for me.”

The Division II men’s race was also very animated. As the field had absorbed a four-rider breakaway at the base of the last climb, Cameron Cogburn (Cambridge, Mass./Massachusetts Institute of Technology) launched his own attack. Michael Burleigh (Denver, Colo./University of Denver) was the lone chaser, but Cogburn’s gap grew to two minutes at the top of the climb. As he was descending, Burleigh crashed and his teammate, Matt Lyons (Denver, Colo./University of Denver), began chasing Cogburn with seven other riders. The chase was too late as Cogburn finished the race more than two minutes before his closest competitor. Lyons won the sprint for second, edging Nick Jowsey (Brevard, N.C./Brevard College), Kit Recca (Golden, Colo./Colorado School of Mines) and Lewis Gaffney (Angel Fire, N.M./Brevard College).

The women competed on a 101-kilometer course under sunny skies with morning temperatures just over 50 degrees. The teams’ strategies were affected by wind gusts that at times were an extra obstacle on climbs.

The 77-rider Division I women’s road race featured several unsuccessful breakaways as the race developed. As the field turned into its last lap, the riders from Marian began to surface at the front. The winner of Saturday's criterium, Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif./Marian University), and Abigail Mickey (Aspen, Colo./University of Colorado-Boulder) dueled up the ascent. Knowing the threat that duo poses, Katharine Hall (Oakland, Calif./University of California-Berkeley) and Rivera’s teammate, Kaitlin Antonneau (Racine, Wis.), caught them at the top of the climb. Antonneau and Rivera dropped Hall and Mickey and sprinted to the finish line. Antonneau, who was the runner-up in this race in 2012, edged Rivera in the sprint to win the race. Mickey and Hall finished only three seconds behind Antonneau and Rivera. Justine Boddy (Loveland, Colo./Colorado State University) was 1:13 behind the winner in fifth place.

“I just knew I had to climb within myself,” Antonneau said. “It was really windy and hard. When we were maybe a half-mile from the top, I really started to dig and go hard to make sure I caught them before we started to descend. That worked out well for me.”

The 39-rider field in the Division II women’s race stayed together through the majority of the race as riders waited to make the first move. Similar to the Division I women’s race, an attack on the last climb stuck through the finish line. Mackinzie Stanley (Walla Walla, Wash./Whitman College) and Danielle Bradley (Waco, Texas/Baylor University), who took ninth in this race last year, braved the headwind and went off the front on the climb and opened a gap. Quickly, Stanley found herself on a solo breakaway as Bradley returned to the field. Despite a five-rider chase group featuring talented riders, Stanley won the race by 24 seconds. Laura Ralston (Cambridge, Mass./Massachusetts Institute of Technology) finished second ahead of Erica Zaveta (Erwinna, Pa./Brevard College), who outsprinted Tanelle Berard (Clive, Iowa/University of Northern Colorado) for third place. Ralston’s teammate, Christina Birch (Somerville, Mass.) placed fifth, 55 seconds behind Stanley.
