Americans shine under cloudy skies at UCI Masters CX Worlds

  
  


Colorado Springs, Colo. (January 30, 2013) -- The 2013 UCI Cyclo-cross Masters World Championships continued Wednesday at Champions Park in Louisville, Ky. A severe storm blew through Louisville overnight, delaying the start of Wednesday's races by two hours and leaving several large puddles of standing water.

Despite the muddy conditions, Americans won nine of the 10 heats contested on Wednesday. Americans swept the three men's 35-39 heats, as Brian Sheedy (Brevard, N.C./Giant), Ali Goulet (Salt Lake City/LooK Cycle) and Russell Stevenson (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) topped their fields. Brandon Dwight (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport), Mark Savery (Omaha, Neb./Midwest Cycling Community NE) and Pete Webber (Boulder, Colo./Boulder Cycle Sport) swept the three heats of the men's 40-44 contests and will receive a spot in the front row. American riders also won the three heats of the men's 45-49 race. Murray Swanson (Woodside, Calif./Peninsula Velo Racing), Jon Cariveau (Steamboat Springs, Colo./MOOTS) and Don Myrah (San Jose, Calif.) completed their two-lap race faster than their respective fields. Additionally, Timothy Hall (Lebanon, Tenn./NashvilleCyclist.com) was the first of eight riders to earn a spot in the men's 40-44 championship race after winning the repechage.

German rider Sven Baumann (GER/Wolverine Sports Club) won the men's 30-34 heat on Wednesday.

The first rainbow jerseys will be awarded on Thursday. The world champions in the men's 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70-and-over will be crowned. Additionally, the women's 30-34, 40-44 and 45-49 will contest their championship races. The men's 35-39 repechage and the consolation races for the men's 35-39 and 40-44 are slated for Thursday's competition.

The races on Saturday and Sunday will be streamed live by the UCI and carried live by USA Cycling. Saturday's races feature the under-23 and juniors 17-18 while Sunday's contests will crown the best elite men and women. The first race on Saturday and Sunday will be at 11 a.m. while the second race is slated for 2:30 p.m.
