Glasgow, Scotland (August 8, 2013) — A young American squad continues to test themselves against the best junior track cyclists in the world at the 2013 UCI Juniors Track World Championships after two days of racing.

Competition began on Wednesday at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Nadia Latzgo (Fogelsville, Pa./EXERGY TWENTY16) and Tara McCormick (Long Beach, Calif./ExergyTWENTY16) notched the best result for Team USA on the day, qualifying seventh in the women’s team sprint. The men’s team sprint squad of Calan Farley (Pittstown, N.J./Chester County Cycling Foundation), James Mellen (Schnecksville, Pa./Sprinter's Edge Track Development team) and Tyler Nothstein (Orefield, Pa./Chester County Cycling Foundation) also qualified in the top ten. Sarah Huang (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./ExergyTWENTY16) finished 12th in the women’s scratch race.

The team of Zach Carlson (Plano, Texas/Matrix Cycling Club), Jordan Cullen (Hudson, Wis./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) , Michael Dessau (Boulder, Colo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) and Jonathan Schilling (Grover, Mo./Slipstream-Craddock Junior Development) were riding well in their team pursuit qualifying ride until a missed exchange on the last four laps slowed the third rider and led to an 18th-place finish.

Today’s second day of racing was highlighted by the women’s team pursuit squad of Huang, Latzgo, McCormick and Laurel Rathbun (Monument, Colo./Exergy TWENTY16) finishing ninth in qualifying. Latzgo also finished 15th in the women’s 500-meter time trial, with Shannon Bhatia (San Jose, Calif./Team TIBCO II) behind her in 16th.

On the men’s side, Carlson just missed a spot in the finals of the scratch race after placing 11th in his qualifying heat. In the men’s keirin, Farley places third in his first round repechage heat but did not advance. Mellen was fifth in his repechage heat. The men’s individual pursuit saw Dessau notch a personal best with a time of 3:29.058, dropping about six seconds from his previous best. It was good for 21st. Cullen finished behind him in 26th.

Competition continues on Friday with the men’s sprint and omnium. The women will compete in the sprint, points race and an omnium round. Visit the UCI Juniors Track World Championships website for a full schedule.
