2013 Elite Timed Track Nationals close with team events
Carson, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2013) -- The 2013 USA Cycling Elite Timed Track National Championships wrapped up a thrilling weekend of racing on Sunday at the StubHub Center's VELO Sports Center in Carson, Calif. Four titles were awarded in team racing on the event's final day.
Men's Team Sprint
Team Felt, comprised of individual time trial champion Matthew Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa.), Kevin Mansker (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Nathan Koch (Los Alamitos, Calif.) captured the Stars-and-Stripes jerseys in the men's team sprint. Earning the silver medal was the Big Boyz team of Jonathan Davy (Torrance, Calif.), Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) and Geoffrey Fryer (Columbia, Tenn.), while the Eddie Boyz team of Quinn Hatfield (Los Angeles, Calif.), Daniel Reback (Long Beach, Calif.) and Thomas Valentine (Irvine, Calif.) took home the bronze medal.
"We put together a great team with Nate and Kevin," said Baranoski. "We didn't make the time standard but we came pretty damn close so I'm happy with it. Everything lined up. We actually had two really good starts and Kevin got right on it and I got right on him, so that's all you can hope for."
Women's Team Sprint
The top two finishers in the women's individual time trial on Friday teamed up for a formidable tandem in the women's team sprint on Sunday and their combined horsepower proved too much for the other teams. Missy Erickson (Alexandria, Minn.) and Madalyn Godby (Louisville, Colo.), Team M&M, crossed the line in 36.171 in the final after posting a qualifying time of 35.367. They defeated the Bike Central team of Jen Featheringill (Portland, Ore.) and Alissa Maglaty (Portland, Ore.) in the final. Coming in third was the CCF/JL Velo duo of Tela Crane (Sammamish, Wash.) and Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa.).
"Unfortunately, we had a less than ideal start when I clipped out, but you just have to shake it off and keep going," Godby said. "We regrouped for the final and we did it. It was fun to ride with her (Erickson). We're excited."
Men's Team Pursuit
Taking the title in the men's 4km team pursuit was the Three Plus One team of Liam Donoghue (Boulder, Colo.), Jacob Duehring (Irvine, Calif.), Stefan Rothe (Austin, Texas) and Mike Zagorski (Lowry, Colo.). They posted a winning time of 4:30.540 to claim gold, defeating the Nissy Cobb Fanboiz team of Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore.), Al Urbanski (Portland, Ore.), Colin Gibson (Seattle, Wash.) and Justin Williams (Tustin, Calif.) in the final. The bronze medal went to the Hellyer 1 team consisting of Alexander Freund (Davis, Calif.), Keith Hillier (Millbrae, Calif.), Garrett Hankins (Carmichael, Calif.) and William Myers (Carmichael, Calif.).
Women's Team Pursuit
The Vumedi p/b Lombardi team culled talent from different squads and dialed up the winning combination in the women's 4km team pursuit. Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa.), Ruth Winder (Lafayette, Calif.), Jessica Cutler (Seattle, Wash.) and individual pursuit champion Jade Wilcoxson (Talent, Ore.) rode to victory in a time of 4:47.312 to defeat the ExergyTWENTY16 team of Erica Allar (Tucson, Ariz.), Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.), Jessica Prinner (South Elgin, Ill.) and Alison Tetrick (Mill Valley, Calif.). Racing to the bronze medal was the Hellyer 1 team of Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa.), Korina Huizar (Roseville, Calif.), Elizabeth Newell (Oakland, Calif.) and Natalie Dell (Redwood City, Calif.).
"It's always a great feeling to win," Winder said after donning her second Stars-and-Stripes jersey in the team pursuit. "I contacted all the girls at the beginning of the year and I knew that it was going to be a little bit of a challenge to come together before nationals and figure it all out. But I know all the girls and I know they're all solid riders, and I was really confident in us and our abilities."
Winder also commented on the back-and-forth battle with the ExergyTWENTY16 team in the final.
"When I'm out on the track I'm always just trying to go as hard as I can. I knew we were a little bit behind at one point, but then I could see the tail end of the Exergy team and at that point I knew we were gaining on them and I thought 'alright, we can do this, we can do this' and just kept digging deep and gave it everything I could and I know all the girls gave it everything they could as well."
ELITE MASS START TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS
The second 2013 national championships for track cycling, the Elite Mass Start Track National Championships, will take place in Rock Hill, S.C., Aug. 22-24, and feature competition in the sprint, scratch race, keirin, points race and Madison.
