2011 U.S. Road World Championship squad announced

  
  


USA Cycling announced today the roster of elite, U23 and junior athletes that will represent the United States at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships, Sept. 19-25 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The roster includes many of our nation’s top young talent as for the first time the junior time trial and road race events will be combined with the U23 and elite races in Copenhagen.

Representing the United States in both the elite men’s road race and time trial will be 2010 USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Champion Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo./BMC Racing) who will be joined by another neo-pro Andrew Talansky (Napa, Calif./Garmin-Cervelo) in the race against the clock.
 
Joining that pair for the road race will be six teammates including Tour de France stage winner Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash./Garmin-Cervelo) and 2011 pro road race national champion Matthew Busche (Wauwatosa, WI/Team Radio Shack), both automatic selections. 2010 pro road race national champion Benjamin King (North Garden, Va./Team Radio Shack), Brent Bookwalter (Athens, Ga./BMC Racing), Jeff Louder (Salt Lake City, Utah/BMC Racing) and Timmy Duggan (Boulder, Colo./Liquigas-Cannondale) will also contest the road race.
 
National champion and automatic nominee Evelyn Stevens (New York, N.Y./Columbia-HTC) will team up with 2008 Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong (Boise, Idaho/ Peanut Butter & CO TWENTY 12) in the elite women’s time trial.
 
As one of the top 25 ranked elite women in the world rankings, Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif./HTC-Highroad) joins elite road race national champion Robin Farina (Charlotte, N.C./NOW and Novartis) as automatic nominees to the elite women’s road race squad. Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Cedar Springs, Mich./Colavita-Baci p/b Cooking Light) and Shelley Olds (Gilroy, Calif./Diadora Pasta Zara), along with the time trial participants, will complete the six-woman squad.
 
Joe Dombrowski(Marshall, Va./Trek-Livestrong) is the sole automatic nominee to the U23 men’s squad by virtue of his top-three finish at the recent UCI 2.2-rated Giro Ciclisto della Valle d'Aosta. Espoir Paris-Roubaix bronze medalist Jacob Rathe (Portland, Ore./Chipotle Development) will join him in the road race, along with: Robert Bush (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Flyers-Texas Roadhouse), Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass./Trek-Livestrong) and Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore./Trek-Livestrong). A combination of two of the three of Lawson Craddock (Houston, Texas/Trek-Livestrong), Carter Jones (Boulder, Colo./Trek-Livestrong) or Nathan Brown (Covington, Tenn./Trek-Livestrong) will contest the time trial.
 
As national champions in the road race and time trial respectively Alexey Vermeulen (Pinckney, Mich./Prochain) and Kristo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS) secured their spots on the junior men’s world championship team. Colby Wait-Molyneux (Vancouver, Wash./Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team) will automatically join Jorgenson in the time trial via his ITT win at the Tour de l'Abitibi earlier this summer.  As discretionary nominees junior strongmen Alex Darville (Santa Barbara, Calif./Echelon Santa Barbara), Paul Lynch (Colchester, Conn./Hot Tubes Development Cycling) and Matthew Lipscomb (Decatur, Ga./Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club/Hincapie Development team) will also contest the road race. 
 
Junior women’s time trial national champ Grace Alexander (Boise, Idaho/BYRDS) and Addyson Albershardt (Matthews, N.C./FLYING PIGS), fresh off of Track World Championships, will compete in the junior women’s time trial and will be joined by junior women’s road race national champion Alexis Ryan (Ventura, Calif./Team TIBCO II) for the road race.
